It is beginning to look like the Uganda Rugby national 7s series will have new champions for the first time in ages.
As at the second break in the 2024 Nile Special 7s Series, Avengers and Platinum Credit Heathens are leading the women’s and men’s overall standings. This follows from their success at the Kyabazinga 7s in Bugembe this weekend.
Through their own efforts and the misfortunes of their closest challengers, Avengers and Heathens are now in charge of the 2024 Nile Special 7s Series.
Avengers won their third Cup Final while Black Pearls lost the semifinal at Bugembe. This increased their advantage from one point to six in the overall standings.
Heathens won their second Cup Final — back-to-back after Gulu — while Black Pirates choked in the quarterfinal early on Sunday morning. This enabled Heathens to break the tie at the top of the series standings and go a whooping nine points clear.
Kyabazinga 7s was this year’s series’s fifth round (of seven). It means that we have gone beyond the point where, legally, according to the tournament manual, champions can be crowned.
Section 1.6 on ‘Failure to complete the 2024 series’ states that “if we have played 4 or more circuits (which gives us more than 50%) then the series stand and the club with the most points will be declared winner.
Nonetheless, the expectation is to rest, recover, and get on one’s marks for the home run of the series in Mbarara (September 28-29) and at Kings Park (October 5-6).
