The 2024 Nile Special 7s Series concluded in nailbiting fashion on Sunday evening at Kings Park. Avengers and Platinum Credit Heathens were women’s and men’s series champions.
Avengers won their maiden 7s series title, dethroning three-time defending champions Black Pearls by four points. Thunderbirds were second runners-up, followed by Nile Rapids and She Wolves.
Heathens beat defending champions Stanbic Black Pirates to win their first 7s series title since 2013 and the twelfth overall. Toyota Buffaloes leapfrogged KCB KOBs, Rhinos, and Walukuba Barbarians into third place.
Relegation & Promotion
According to the tournament manual, one women’s and two men’s teams were relegated from the national 7s series and will lose their core status for the 2025 season.
Kitgum Queens, who recorded the longest mileage of all teams in the series, took the wooden spoon in women’s standings. Impis and Warriors finished at the bottom of the men’s standings.
Replacements for these three teams – the winner of the women’s competition and the finalists of the men’s competition – will be confirmed after the Core Status Qualification Tournament has been played.
Winners’ Prize Money
Title sponsor Nile Special reserved a prize money kitty of close to UGX 45 million for the 7s series this year. This money would be split and disbursed to circuit/round winners & the respective MVPs, overall series winners, first & second runners-up, and the overall series individual award winners.
For every round, the women’s and men’s Cup Final winners received UGX 1 million each. This was handed over in cash at the respective venues in Entebbe, Mbale, Kyadondo, Gulu, Bugembe, Mbarara, and Kings Park. The respective men’s and women’s MVPs also got UGX 100,000 (one hundred thousand Uganda shillings) cash.
