Nottingham Forest v Ipswich prediction

Nottingham Forest head into tonight’s eighth and final FA Cup fifth round clash as odds on favourites to book their place in the quarter final of the competition for just the second time since 1996.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are enjoying a breathtaking campaign so far, exceeding every expectation they had ahead of the season, with the club flying high in third in the Premier League table with only 11 games of the season remaining.

The potential for Champions League football to take place at the City Ground next season is a very real possibility, though it remains unclear if the club will prioritise the prospect of European football returning to Nottinghamshire or if they’ll put more eggs in their FA Cup basket and a first major trophy since the 1990 League Cup.

Forest have won only one of their last five Premier League matches, losing three on that run, leaving them now just a point clear of Manchester City in fourth and two clear of Chelsea in fifth, with Man City next to come for Forest in the league.

The East Midlands side are unbeaten in their last eight games at the City Ground in all competitions, winning six of those, and take on an Ipswich side without a league win this calendar year.

Kieran McKenna’s side are lodged in a relegation battle in their first season in the top flight since 2001-02, with their 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford last week leaving them in 18th place in the table and five points from safety.

It seems likely the Tractor Boys will focus more on their attempt to keep hold of their Premier League status than their run in the FA Cup, though they may see tonight as a pleasant distraction with nothing major on the line and the chance to gain some much needed confidence with a win that would leave them just a win away from Wembley.

The Suffolk side have lost six of their last seven matches against Premier League opposition, but have won comfortably in their two FA Cup ties this season, albeit against lower league opposition Bristol Rovers 3-0 before winning 4-1 away at Championship play-off hopefuls Coventry.

Forest have won three of their last four matches against Ipswich without defeat, and are 15 matches unbeaten against the Tractor Boys at the City Ground, with Ipswich losing on each of their last four visits.

Forest’s stellar home record this season and their far superior position in the Premier League table makes them strong favourites for victory tonight against an Ipswich side without a win against Premier League opposition since 2024.

Forest will likely make changes to their side as they face defending champions Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime so may not be firing on all cylinders, but should still come through the bout relatively unscathed – I’m predicting a 3-1 home win.

Nottingham Forest v Ipswich betting tips

Forest are expected to rest their 18-goal striker Chris Wood for tonight’s cup tie, leaving more reliability on the club’s chief playmaker and second-leading goal scorer Morgan Gibbs-White to influence their attacking play tonight.

Only one Ipswich player has received more bookings this season their captain Samy Morsy, who picked up his seventh of the season in his last outing at Old Trafford and will likely be his usual combative self tonight once again.
