Nottingham Forest and Manchester City are both fighting for a top-five finish in the Premier League, but they will put their Champions League aspirations on hold this weekend.

A place in the FA Cup final is the prize Forest and City will be fighting for at Wembley Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s side are favourites, but might they come unstuck against the Premier League’s surprise package?

Nottingham Forest vs Manchester City predictions

As well as both reaching the FA Cup semi-finals, Nottingham Forest and Manchester City are virtually neck and neck in the Premier League. Yet for obvious reasons, the interpretation of their respective seasons is vastly different.

Having spent the last two campaigns battling against relegation, few expected Forest to emerge as Champions League contenders this term.

Currently fourth in the table, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are aiming to secure an improbable seat at Europe’s top table.

An FA Cup triumph, meanwhile, would bring Forest their first major trophy since 1990. Even Brian Clough did not manage to bring the FA Cup back to the City Ground.

City have the exact same objective as Forest having dropped out of the Premier League title race long ago.

This has been their worst season since Pep Guardiola’s debut campaign at the helm, yet a top-five finish and success in the FA Cup would not be a bad outcome all things considered.

City have declined markedly over the last few months and there is still plenty of work to be done if they want to regain the title in 2025/26. They have picked up of late, though, with Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Aston Villa another step in the right direction.

City have now won four of their last five matches in the top flight, as well as beating Bournemouth 2-1 in the quarter-finals of this competition. That followed victories over Plymouth Argyle, Leyton Orient and Salford City in prior rounds.

Forest owe their place in the last four to wins against Luton Town, Exeter City, Ipswich Town and Brighton & Hove Albion. The last three of those ties were decided on penalties, potentially giving Forest the edge if this one requires a shoot-out after extra time.

City beat Forest 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium back in December, but their most recent defeat in the Premier League came at the hands of their upcoming opponents, who ran out 1-0 winners on home turf last month.

“We have to focus on the Premier League but it’s going to be a beautiful moment for all of us on our journey,” Nuno said of the FA Cup semi-final after the defeat of Brighton. “We are so, so happy.”

Forest fans will be even more ecstatic if their team can do the business on Sunday.

Nottingham Forest vs Manchester City betting tips

A place in the FA Cup final is up for grabs when these two teams battle it out at Wembley.

Draw

Manchester City’s reputation means they are the bookies’ favourites, but it is important to remember that Nottingham Forest have been their equals this season.

We should judge Forest on what they have done in 2024/25 rather than on their overall status in the English game.

Nuno’s team are more than capable of beating City. They will allow Guardiola’s team to control possession with the aim of breaking forward quickly in transition. It is a game plan that could very easily bear fruit.

However, City have turned a corner in recent weeks. They also have an abundance of attacking options and potential game-changers on the bench.

It is hard to split these two teams, so the draw looks very attractive at this price.

Under 2.5 goals

With a place in the FA Cup final up for grabs, there will be plenty of tension in the air at Wembley.

Because the stakes are so high, FA Cup semi-finals are often tight and cagey affairs. For instance, five of the last eight featured under 2.5 goals. There is a good chance this one will follow suit.

This bet would have paid out in six of Manchester City’s last nine Premier League matches and in six of Forest’s last nine outings in all competitions.

The meeting between this pair at the City Ground in March featured just one strike, with Callum Hudson-Odoi making the net bulge in the 83rd minute.

All things considered, this is unlikely to be a high-scoring encounter.

Chris Wood to score any time

Chris Wood was on target in his last appearance, nodding home Nottingham Forest’s second goal in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Wood is enjoying the best season of his career. The 33-year-old has scored 19 goals in the Premier League, a tally bettered by only three players.

Nuno has tended to use Taiwo Awoniyi in the FA Cup up to now, but he will surely start the New Zealand international at Wembley.

Wood is a real handful up front and the striker, who must be bursting with confidence right now, is bound to trouble Manchester City on Sunday.
