Titus Okwong swung to the overall gong at the 2024 Stanbic Entebbe Golf Open.
Okwong, a member of the Uganda national team amassed a total gross of 221 (+8) in 54 holes played over 3 rounds.
He easily toppled the rest of the elite class golfers at the par-71 lake side Entebbe club in Entebbe Municipality, Division A.
After a dismissal start with 5-over 76 on the opening round, Okwong improved to 1-over 72 during round two for the 18 holes and completed the tourney with +2 (73 gross during round three).
“It was a competitive and good tournament. I am happy to win” Okwong who earned Ug.Shs 2,000,000 remarked.
“After a slow start, I still had the believe that I would improve and I did it. I thank my playing mates for the brave show” he added.
Samuel Bazaale and Peter Tumusiime played second fiddle to Okwong with a joint total gross score of 221 (+9) in 54 holes.
These two golfer Bazaale (78, 71, 73) and Tumusiime (76, 72, 74) each earned Ug.Shs 1,000,000 for their performance.
Micheal Tumusiime (77, 76, 70), Abdallah Kakooza (71, 78, 74) and Joseph Kasozi (71, 78, 74) tied on 223 gross apiece to share Ug.Shs 750,000 each for their efforts.
A total of 33 elite golfers were involved with a sizable number of 100 plus in the subsidiary cluster (both men and women).
This amateur event is part of the World ranking system and the players earned points to the global ranking.
Professionals:
Meanwhile, Tadeo Rodell Gaita successfully defended his crown in the professional category to earn Ug.Shs 6,000,000, the biggest share from the professional kitty of Ug.Shs 40,000,000.
Gaita beat Phillip Kasozi on sudden death after the two golfers had tied 286 gross apiece in four grueling rounds.
David Kamulindwa (287), Abraham Ainamani (291), Jasta Madoya (291), Erick Ooko (292), Celestine Nsanzwera (292), Dismas Indiza (292), Davis Kato (293), Ronald Otile (294), Silver Opio (294) and Aviator, Cinemax- sponsored Herman Deco Mutebi (295) made the top 12 positions.
Stanbic Bank board member Aggie Konde was among the high profile Stanbic representatives who graced this tournament.
Konde also celebrated her birthday on the final round of the championship, a signature tournament for Entebbe club.
For starters, Entebbe club was started in 1901 and remains one of the oldest golfing facilities not only in Uganda, but also in the East African region.
