England will look to wrap up a Test series win when they face Pakistan in Multan this week.

The visitors are 1-0 up after a stunning victory over their hosts on the official fifth-flattest wicket in Test history last week.

It was a Test match that saw England and certain individuals break records and hit new achievements.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, racking up 556 in 149 overs.

This looked to be a daunting score, and when Ollie Pope fell for nought, it seemed even harder, but England incredibly reached 823/7 – the fourth-highest Test score since records began.

That was in large part down to England’s highest-ever Test partnership of 454 between Joe Root and Harry Brook.

Brook ended up getting 317 and Root 262, while the latter surpassed Sir Alastair Cook as England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer.

With a healthy lead and numerous records smashed, the visitors set about bowling Pakistan out, which they managed to do for 222.

This ensured England won by an innings and 47 runs, which is the first time a team has conceded 500+ runs and won by an innings.

They now head into the second Test with the fixture set to be played on the same wicket as the hosts gamble on a used surface.

Pakistan vs England second Test: Team news

England are expecting to have Ben Stokes back.

The Test captain missed the first encounter as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury suffered earlier this year while competing in The Hundred.

The all-rounder was included in the squad with the expectation he would be fit for the opening Test and while that wasn’t the case, he looks to have won his race against time to be fit here.

Chris Woakes is likely to be the man to miss out.

Elsewhere, the tourists are unlikely to make too many changes, given their excellent performance.

Meanwhile, the hosts have made some shock decisions.

They’ve decided to drop star batter Babar Azam, while key bowlers Shaheen Shah Sfridi and Naseem Shah are also out.

Abrar Ahmed didn’t bat in the second innings of the first Test, and he is missing this one due to illness.

Uncapped trio Haseebullah, Mehran Mumtaz and Kamran Ghulam have been called up, alongside fast bowler Mohammad Ali and off-spinner Sajid Khan.

Pakistan squad: Shan Masood (c), Saud Shakeel, Aamer Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Haseebullah, Kamran Ghulam, Mehran Mumtaz, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Huraira, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Noman Ali, Saim Ayub, Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha, Zahid Mehmood.

England squad: Ben Stokes (c), Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Olly Stone, Chris Woakes

Pakistan vs England second Test: What has been said?

England’s stand-in captain Pope was full of praise for Root and Brook after they helped England to an opening win.

Speaking after the first Test, he said: “Those are the ones that we really look back on, and this is right up there with the rest of them too.

“Everyone knows what a special win this was. Credit to those two Yorkshiremen, the way Rooty and Brooky went about it.

“In another situation, you’d play a few more shots once you’re past your hundred, but they knew how important it was to get us up to that massive score.

“And then, the way the bowlers bowled was phenomenal.

“It’s been a serious effort from those guys in the heat. A really pleasing performance.”
