There’s a first time for everything, even for Patrick Mahomes.
Except this time around, it’s not a new record he’s breaking or a new barrier he’s smashing.
Mahomes wasn’t named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career since becoming the starting quarterback for the Chiefs[/caption]
It’s a not-so great first for the star quarterback.
For the first time since becoming Kansas City’s starter in 2018, Mahomes did not make the Pro Bowl.
He had made it the previous six times.
The three AFC quarterbacks who were chosen over Mahomes, were Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow.
All deserving.
While Mahomes had led the Chiefs to a 15-1 record, with the one seed locked up, he hasn’t had the best year when it comes to the lofty expectations that we all expect out of him.
He finished with the lowest amount of passing yards and touchdowns of his career since becoming the starter, with 3,928 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Good numbers, but in a season where Allen, Jackson and Burrow have played at a historic level, there simply wasn’t room for Mahomes this year.
As if he needed any more motivation heading into the postseason, this will only add more fuel to the fire.
Mahomes and the Chiefs are looking to become the first team in NFL history to go back-to-back-to-back.
Winning three Super Bowls in a row isn’t supposed to be possible in a league with so much parity.
It is when you have Mahomes.
After the Pro Bowl rosters were announced, fans took to X to warn everyone not to poke the bear.
‘You guys haven’t learned …. Don’t poke the bear?’ one fan said.
‘Being snubbed is generally fuel for a competitor like Mahomes. Probably has that on the wall in the locker room already to motivate the guys,’ another fan chimed in.
Whether he was truly snubbed or not is hard to argue, because of the play of the three guys ahead of him, but it’s one some fans have made.
There is still a chance Mahomes can make the Pro Bowl, if either Allen, Jackson or Burrow make the Super Bowl or simply decide not to participate, Mahomes would be in as an alternate.
However, Mahomes may be busy himself.
The Chiefs look as primed as ever to hoist the Lombardi Trophy for the third year in a row.
If that happens, it’s Mahomes who will once again get the last laugh.
