Poland vs Portugal predictions

Portugal are one of only three teams in League A of the 2024/25 Nations League with maximum points to their name so far (Italy and Denmark are the other two). Yet despite their 100 percent record, Roberto Martinez’s men have not had everything their own way up to now.

Portugal edged out Croatia 2-1 on matchday one, before the same scoreline saw them past Scotland a few days later. In that second game, they needed a late winner from Cristiano Ronaldo to save the day.

Ronaldo did not begin that match in the XI. It seemed a long overdue move, even if it was only temporary.

Ronaldo appeared to hold Portugal back at Euro 2024. Because of his personality and track record, his team-mates tried to funnel every attack through him.

But while no one can argue with what the 39-year-old has achieved in the game – there is no doubt he is one of the greatest players of all time – Ronaldo is patently past his best these days.

If anyone was hoping that dropping Ronaldo would instantly make Portugal a free-flowing outfit, however, they were disappointed in that stuttering performance against Scotland. Indeed, the same old problems dogged Martinez’s team in that match until Ronaldo made his dramatic intervention.

Portugal were excellent in Euro 2024 qualifying, when their individual quality allowed them to simply overwhelm most of their opponents. But when they face a top team or even a member of Europe’s second tier, Portugal are nowhere near as impressive.

It will be interesting to see how they get on against Poland, who can be awkward opponents when they are at it. Michał Probierz’s men battled to a 3-2 victory over Scotland on matchday one, before losing 1-0 to Croatia last time out.

A win for Portugal would put them in a very healthy position indeed as they target a top-two finish and a place in the quarter-finals.

Ronaldo and co. have won the Nations League before and doing so again this campaign would go some way to making up for their underwhelming showing in Germany over the summer.

Poland vs Portugal betting tips

Portugal are looking to make it three wins from three in the 2024/25 Nations League.

Portugal to win

Even after so long in management, it is still hard to work out exactly how good Martinez is.

The Spaniard has had some success during his career, but it would be interesting to see exactly what sort of club job he would get after so long in the international game.

Whether he is the man to win trophies with this talented Portugal squad remains to be seen, but he should be able to oversee a victory over Poland in this game.

The Poles have picked up since Probierz took the reins and they should be able to keep things close against Portugal.

In the end, though, the sheer weight of talent available to Martinez is likely to tip the balance in his team’s favour. An away victory is the most probable outcome in Warsaw this weekend.

Both teams to score

Portugal did not manage to keep a clean sheet in either of their two Nations League assignments last month and they could be denied one here too.

In recent years Poland have too often been a lacklustre attacking team, despite the presence at the top of the pitch of a world-class centre-forward in Robert Lewandowski.

Yet they looked sharp in the final third in that 3-2 victory over Scotland last month and have generally been more productive going forward in Probierz’s tenure.

Martinez is an attack-minded manager who has been known to play without a holding midfielder at times, so there is reason for neutrals to hope that this will be an open affair.

Poland are capable of making the net bulge in front of their own supporters, even if we do not expect them to avoid defeat.

Robert Lewandowski to score any time

Expect the build-up to this game to focus on two men: the aforementioned duo of Ronaldo and Lewandowski, two of the greatest attacking players Europe has ever produced.

Tipping Lewandowski to find the back of the net is a better choice from a betting perspective.

Whereas Ronaldo is now strutting his stuff in Saudi Arabia (and in fairness he is two and a half years older than Lewandowski), the Poland international is still firing in the goals at the highest level.

Lewandowski has had a blistering start to the club campaign, having made the net bulge 12 times in 11 outings in all competitions.

The Barcelona striker is shining under the guidance of Hansi Flick, his old boss at Bayern Munich. Lewandowski can carry his club form onto the international stage, starting with Saturday’s showdown against Portugal.
