On Wednesday, December 12, 2024, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni officially commissioned the High-Altitude Training Centre in Teryet, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s sports development.

The colourful ceremony featured President Museveni laying the foundation stone and inaugurating the world-class facility upon the completion of its first phase.

Addressing the gathering, President Museveni emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting sports and fostering growth in the Sebei region.

“We, as the government, are ready to continue supporting the sports industry,” Museveni assured. “We pledge to our gallant athletes that we shall walk with them on their journey to excellence and victory.”

The modern facility represents a major boost for Uganda’s sports industry, offering a platform to nurture raw talent and enhance athletic performance.

The sports facility features an athletic track, an artificial turf, comfortable hostels, a dining hall, and a fully equipped kitchen.

The centre’s strategic high-altitude location offers a natural advantage for training, enabling athletes to build endurance and resilience.

State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, highlighted that many athletes have already expressed interest in utilising the facility.

Prominent Ugandan athletes such as Joshua Cheptegei, Peruth Chemutai, and Jacob Kiplimo have trained at Teryet in preparation for their recent international competitions.

The facility is also expected to attract international athletes seeking high-altitude training, boosting sports tourism in Uganda.

The Sebei region, known for producing legendary athletes like Moses Kipsiro, Stephen Kiprotich, Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo, and Peruth Chemutai, now has a modern training hub to further cement its legacy as a powerhouse of talent in athletics.
