Preston v Burnley prediction
Burnley make the short trip across Lancashire on Saturday lunchtime for their FA Cup fifth round clash with fellow Championship side Preston as strong favourites for victory, with the side currently battling for automatic promotion back to the Premier League.
Scott Parker’s side’s 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday last Friday closed their gap between themselves in third and Sheffield United in second to just two points, putting them in striking distance of an instant return to the Premier League.
The Clarets head into Saturday’s bout unbeaten in any competition since November, without defeat in any of their last 23 matches and with a startling defensive record which sees them with just nine league goals conceded across their 34 Championship matches, with clean sheets in each of their last 12 in the league.
Burnley have won four of their last five games ahead of the weekend, with their only draw in that period coming away at Preston, who are winless in each of their last three games ahead of Saturday lunchtime.
Last weekend saw the Lilywhites’ run of one defeat in their last 10 matches come to an end as they were beaten 2-1 by Coventry, leaving Paul Heckingbottom’s side 15th in the table and three points off the top half, though despite their unbeaten run they have won only one of their last five in the league now.
Both of Preston and Burnley’s meetings in the Championship this season ended in 0-0 draws, with three of their last four being stalemates, with the Clarets losing only one of their last nine derbies against the Lilywhites.
Preston v Burnley betting tips
All three of Heckingbottom’s meetings with Parker have ended in 0-0 draws, and with Burnley not having conceded in 12 league games it seems hard to predict the Lilywhites will breach the Clarets’ defence on Saturday.
Despite their sensational defensive record, the East Lancashire side have tended to struggle putting the pull in the net this season, with nine teams having scored more in the second tier than Burnley in spite off their third place position.
