PSG vs PSV predictions

When the draw for the league phase of the 2024/25 Champions League was made, Paris Saint-Germain felt more hard done by than most.

The UEFA computer pitted Luis Enrique’s side against some of the continent’s top teams, including Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Manchester City.

It was vital, then, that PSG got off to a winning start on matchday one – but they very nearly stumbled. A last-gasp own goal was required for the Parisians to edge out Girona 1-0 at the Parc des Princes.

At the beginning of this month, PSG suffered a 2-0 defeat by Arsenal which showed why they are not considered among the leading contenders to lift the trophy this season.

It was a comfortable victory for the Gunners in the end, with PSG unable to match Mikel Arteta’s men across 90 minutes of action at the Emirates Stadium.

Nothing can be taken for granted in football and it is worth noting that Monaco and Marseille have made promising starts to the season, but it would still be a surprise if PSG did not win the Ligue 1 title this term.

True, they lost their star man Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid in the summer and did not go out and sign a global superstar as his replacement. But even without the World Cup winner, PSG have a significantly stronger squad than any of their domestic rivals. They also possess the title-winning experience that the current iterations of Monaco and Marseille lack.

But the Ligue 1 title is no longer enough to satisfy the club from the capital given the substantial financial and structural advantages they enjoy in France. The Champions League is the one PSG really want.

A top-eight finish, you feel, will be tough given the calibre of opponents PSG must face between now and the end of January. But a win here would put Luis Enrique’s charges on course to at least secure a berth in the knockout phase play-offs.

On the other hand, dropping points at home to PSV – as they almost did against Girona first time out – would represent a major setback for PSG, whose wait for an elusive maiden Champions League crown goes on.

PSG vs PSV betting tips

It is the battle of the acronyms at the Parc des Princes as PSG entertain PSV in the Champions League.

PSG to win and both teams to score

PSV were sensational in the Eredivisie in 2023/24, winning the title with 91 points and 111 goals in a 34-game campaign.

They have continued in the same vein this time around, winning each of their first nine matches in the Dutch top flight to show that they are still the team to beat domestically.

However, PSV are yet to make their mark on the Champions League. They were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Juventus on matchday one, before drawing 1-1 with Sporting CP at the beginning of this month.

PSV are an attacking team under Peter Bosz and we think they will have some joy against an unconvincing PSG defence.

But the jury is still out on whether this PSV side can really compete with members of Europe’s elite.

Choose a PSG win and both teams to score at 5/4 with Midnite

Over 3.5 goals

One charge that cannot be levelled against PSV is a lack of entertainment value.

Bosz’s attacking philosophy has not always worked at his previous clubs, but he has had great success in Eindhoven while sticking to his principles.

Do not expect PSV to line up in two banks of four on Tuesday. They will commit bodies to attack whenever they can and attempt to take the game to PSG.

Call it admirable or call it naive, but PSV’s approach means they are one of the most watchable teams around at the moment.

Since PSG’s best approach would be to fight fire with fire, it is difficult to see this being a low-scoring affair.

Go for over 3.5 goals at 11/10 with Midnite

Bradley Barcola to score any time

The exit of Mbappe at the end of last season spelled the end of the galactico era at the Parc des Princes, with the Frenchman following Neymar and Lionel Messi out of the exit door.

There has been a conscious shift towards youth over the last couple of years, with PSG determined to take full advantage of their productive academy.

Bradley Barcola did not come through the ranks at PSG; he was instead reared at Lyon. But there is no doubting the 22-year-old’s potential.

No player in Ligue 1 has scored more goals than Barcola, who has made the net ripple on seven occasions so far.

The forward is in top form right now and he will be a thorn in the side of PSV throughout Tuesday’s clash.
