Paris Saint-Germain vs Rennes predictions

With PSG in Champions League action on Tuesday, the Ligue 1 authorities have done them a favour by scheduling this home game against Rennes for Friday night.

That gives Luis Enrique’s side the chance to temporarily open up a three-point lead at the summit of the standings, but the lesson from the first few weeks of 2024/25 is that PSG will not necessarily have everything their own way this season.

It has been a positive start to the campaign overall for the reigning champions, who remain strong favourites to top the table again this term.

PSG won their first four games to set the early pace in Ligue 1, beating Le Havre, Montpellier, Lille and Brest by an aggregate score of 16-3.

The club from the capital then overcame Girona 1-0 in the Champions League thanks to an own goal in the 90th minute.

But PSG dropped points last weekend in a 1-1 draw with Reims. They went behind at the Stade Auguste-Delaune, before Ousmane Dembele stepped up to equalise midway through the second half.

PSG created chances but were let down by some wayward finishing, much as they were in the aforementioned game against Girona in Europe. That is one area where Kylian Mbappe is particularly missed, since the likes of Dembele are inconsistent with their final ball (even if he did score last time out).

Marseille and Monaco are level on points with PSG heading into the weekend, fuelling hope that at least one of those two sides will be able to challenge for the title.

No one wants a one-team league and it would be much healthier if PSG were, at the very least, pushed all the way for the remainder of the campaign. A procession even after losing Mbappe would not be good for anyone, not even PSG.

The Champions League is an obsession at the Parc des Princes; that is no secret. Luis Enrique will already have half an eye on the upcoming game against Arsenal, which takes place across the Channel in London.

Yet with Marseille and Monaco also looking good, PSG cannot afford to take their eye off the domestic ball.

PSG vs Rennes betting tips

Paris Saint-Germain are strong favourites to get the better of Stade Rennais as the Ligue 1 weekend begins on Friday.

PSG -1.5 Asian handicap

Luis Enrique will want to get the three points in the bag as quickly as possible.

If PSG were, say, 3-0 up with an hour on the clock, the manager could take off some of his most important players ahead of the trip to Arsenal.

Rennes are no pushovers. After finishing 10th last time out, they have started the current campaign reasonably well: a record of two wins, a draw and two defeats has them seventh in the standings going into this match.

However, this is their first meeting with a team currently in the top three. Moreover, both of Rennes’ away games to date have ended in defeat.

That does not bode well for this visit to the Parc des Princes, where PSG should have enough to win by at least two clear goals.

PSG to score over 2.5 goals

PSG may not have been as ruthless as they should have been in their last two outings against Girona and Reims, but they are at least fashioning plenty of opportunities.

They rank top of the expected goals table with 13.9, significantly more than the next-best 10.8 registered by Nice.

Even without the injured Marco Asensio and the departed Mbappe, PSG have plenty of firepower at the top end of the pitch.

They tend to be particularly prolific when playing in front of their own fans at the Parc des Princes, and punters should note that Rennes have conceded five times in their two away games to date.

PSG are more than capable of finding the net three times or more on Friday.

Kolo Randal Muani to score any time

Attacking trio Asensio, Goncalo Ramos and Desire Doue are all sidelined for Friday’s encounter, so Luis Enrique is likely to go with a front three of Dembele, Randal Kolo Muani and Bradley Barcola.

It is the latter who has caught the eye the most up to now, but we like the look of Kolo Muani in the anytime scorer market.

Kolo Muani has only started once in Ligue 1 this season, but he has already scored two goals.

Now in his second season at the Parc des Princes, Kolo Muani should breeze past his tally of six strikes in 2024/25.

The France international can move closer to that number when Rennes come to town.
