PSV vs Sporting CP predictions

At first glance, this fixture does not particularly stand out among those taking place on matchday two of the Champions League. Yet dig a little deeper and there is reason to believe that this could be one of the games to watch this midweek.

The reason for that is the respective records of both teams so far this season. PSV have won seven games out of seven in the Eredivisie, while Sporting CP have won seven out of seven games in the Primeira Liga.

The duo have not had absolutely everything their own way up to now. PSV lost the Johan Cruyff Shield to Feyenoord, while Sporting were beaten by Porto in the Supertaca Candido de Oliveira (both games are the equivalent of the Community Shield in England).

The pair also had differing experiences in the first round of Champions League fixtures in the new-look league phase, which sees 36 teams all ranked in the same group.

Whereas Sporting ran out 2-0 winners against Lille a fortnight ago, PSV fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Juventus.

Sporting deserved to collect all three points in their opening encounter. Lille had Angel Gomes  sent off in the first half in Lisbon, a development which clearly had an adverse effect on their chances of victory.

But Sporting were already 1-0 up at that point and they were the better team before and after the red card. They outshot Lille 18-3 over the course of the 90 minutes.

The outcome in Juventus’ duel with PSV was also just. Worryingly for Peter Bosz’s side, Juve created an abundance of chances and were 3-0 up early in the second half. PSV’s goal came deep in stoppage time when their hosts had switched off.

Sporting’s win on matchday one gives them a little breathing space ahead of Tuesday’s tussle, whereas the pressure is on PSV to get off the mark in Europe.

A trip to Paris Saint-Germain follows on October 22, so a defeat here would open up the very real prospect that PSV could be sitting on zero points going into their fourth Champions League match.

PSV vs Sporting CP betting tips

PSV and Sporting CP will both be targeting all three points on matchday two of the Champions League.

Draw

PSV, with some justification, would argue that there is no shame in losing to Juventus away from home, but the loss did little to quell concerns that, despite their domestic dominance, Bosz’s men will struggle to compete in the Champions League.

PSV were sensational in the Eredivisie last term, winning 29 and drawing four of their 34 encounters. They amassed 91 points and scored an astonishing 111 goals – an average of 3.26 per game.

In the Champions League, though, they finished second in their group with a negative goal difference, then lost to Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16.

At the continental level, Sporting probably have a touch more proven quality than PSV, but home advantage could be a factor here.

A draw looks like the best choice as two domestic high-fliers go head-to-head.

Over 3.5 goals

The main reason why neutrals should consider tuning in to this clash at Philips Stadion is the attack-minded nature of both teams.

Bosz, for better or worse, has encouraged his teams to play on the front foot throughout his managerial career. At other clubs that approach has backfired, but the Dutchman has done a brilliant job at PSV.

Sporting could be a match for them, though. With Viktor Gyokeres, the former Coventry City man, leading the way, Ruben Amorim’s side are similarly productive in the final third.

PSV’s nine games this season have averaged 4.56 goals, while Sporting’s nine encounters have averaged four.

There should be chances galore in Eindhoven as two irresistible forces from different second-tier European leagues battle it out for three precious Champions League points.

Luuk de Jong to score any time

If PSV are to emerge triumphant on Tuesday, they will need Luuk de Jong to be efficient with any opportunities that come his way.

De Jong was a superb player for PSV between 2014 and 2019, and he has been even more prolific since returning to the club two years ago.

His 95 appearances since then have seen the former Newcastle United frontman make the net bulge 61 times, including on five occasions so far this season.

De Jong is a threat from open play and he is also the designated penalty-taker under Bosz, who decided to rest the striker for the 2-0 defeat of Willem II at the weekend.

The 34-year-old should therefore be fresh for the visit of Sporting CP, who will have their hands full in trying to keep him quiet.
