Real Madrid vs Villarreal predictions

For the first time in 36 matches, Real Madrid suffered defeat on Wednesday.

A 1-0 loss to Lille in the Champions League came as a huge surprise, as Carlo Ancelotti’s side struggled to get going at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

Until this midweek, Madrid had not lost a match in 258 days. Yet despite being unbeaten at the start of 2024/25, the Blancos have not been overly convincing up to now.

They stuttered at the start of the La Liga season, drawing two of their first three games. A run of four consecutive wins followed, before Madrid drew with Atletico Madrid 1-1 at the weekend. Then came the Lille defeat.

There is no need to go overboard with the criticism. Even the best teams in the world have off-days. But it is equally fair to say that Madrid were substandard against a Lille side that is not exactly among the strongest the continent has to offer.

Ancelotti, not for the first time this season, was honest in his assessment of Madrid’s performance on matchday two of the Champions League.

“The criticism is totally fair today. I accept it. We were very bad in every aspect. We showed a bad image, bad feelings,” he said.

“They played better. It was hard for us to get into the game. We only had chances at the end and with crosses. The team was not good. Nothing, learn from the defeat and improve. Sometimes losing is useful. It’s a very long season and we have to improve. It seemed like we were doing it, but today we went back a bit.”

It is vital that Madrid return to winning ways this weekend. Ancelotti will be looking for his team to play with the sort of intensity that was conspicuous by its absence in the defeat by Lille.

With Barcelona not in action until Sunday, Madrid have the chance to go level at the top of the table by beating Villarreal. That would be a psychological boost and would put Barca under pressure to respond when they face Alaves.

Given their inconsistent performances so far this term, though, nothing can be taken for granted as far as Madrid are concerned.

Real Madrid vs Villarreal betting tips

Real Madrid and Villarreal will go head-to-head at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu this weekend.

Real Madrid to win by one goal

Villarreal have had a fine start to the campaign and would go above Real Madrid in the standings if they triumph at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

The Yellow Submarine suffered a 5-1 home loss to Barcelona last month, but they have otherwise been excellent. Back-to-back victories over Espanyol and Las Palmas since that defeat by Barca have lifted Villarreal up to third place.

Marcelino’s men are absent from European competition and have thus had a full week to prepare for Saturday’s showdown.

But despite the positivity around Villarreal right now, it will be tough for them to get out of the Bernabeu with a point or three.

Madrid have won 13 of their last 15 La Liga games in front of their own supporters. They are likely to get the better of Villarreal here, but it could be a close-run thing.

Tip Real Madrid to win by one goal at 7/2 with bet365

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals

Real Madrid were subdued going forward against Lille last time out, but they have been scoring plenty of goals  in La Liga of late.

Madrid have found the back of the net at least twice in four of their last five league games, with the exception being that 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid.

Villarreal’s matches have been among the most entertaining in the division, featuring a total of 32 goals – an average of four per game.

Indeed, this bet would have paid out in all but one of Villarreal’s eight league games up to now.

We should be in store for an entertaining encounter at the Bernabeu on Saturday evening.

Back both teams to score and over 2.5 goals at 5/6 with bet365

Ayoze Perez to score any time

Kylian Mbappe was fit enough for a place on the bench against Lille on Wednesday and he could return to the starting XI this weekend.

Rodrygo could also return to the line-up after missing out in the Champions League, with Endrick likely to make way.

However, from a betting perspective we reckon Ayoze Perez is the best choice in the anytime scorer market, especially at such attractive odds.

Only Robert Lewandowski has been more prolific in Spain’s top flight than Perez, who has made the net bulge six times up to now.

Breaching Real Madrid’s backline will not be easy, but an in-form Perez is certainly capable of doing so.

Choose Ayoze Perez to score any time at 4/1 with bet365
