Cristiano Ronaldo has been told that he would be welcome back at Manchester United as they prepare for new boss Ruben Amorim to take over.
The Portugal international and Al Nassr forward was at Manchester United from 2003 to 2009, as well as between 2021-22, and former Red Devils striker Teddy Sheringham thinks that Amorim would have him back for a third spell.
Sheringham told Flash Score, as quoted by Goal, that he believes Ronaldo would be welcomed back at Old Trafford in some capacity as the player nears the end of his playing career.
“Cristiano Ronaldo would be very welcome back at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim, but he is onto bigger and better things,” ex-Man United and England forward Sheringham said.
He continued: “I think that Ronaldo will follow in the path of David Beckham in doing things away from coaching, higher profile things around the world.
“I’m sure he’d be very, very welcome in any capacity coming back to the club, but I doubt that he’ll be a coach.”
It was a tumultuous return to Old Trafford last time Ronaldo was there, however. The Portugal captain was brought back to his former club for a brief year-long spell.
The forward had a frosty relationship with interim Red Devils boss Ralf Rangnick and fell out with former manager Erik ten Hag and then revealed to Piers Morgan that he felt betrayed by both the boss and the club.
A disappointing 2021/22 campaign for United saw them finish sixth and qualify for the Europa League, meaning Ronaldo went without a trophy for the first time since 2010.
Ronaldo was seeking Champions League football, though he eventually signed for Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr on a salary of €200million per year.
Although coaching may be in the future, Ronaldo is keen on reaching a huge career milestone of 1,000 career goals after scoring his 900th in the Nations League last September.
Since moving to Al Nassr, he has scored over 70 goals for the club.
Ruben Amorim is due to take over as Manchester United boss on November 11, with interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy currently at the helm.
Manchester United face Greek side PAOK in the Europa League on Wednesday, live on talkSPORT.
They then entertain Leicester in what will be interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy’s final game in charge, with Amorim’s first game seeing the Red Devils go to Ipswich on November 24.
Since Erik ten Hag’s departure, they have beaten Leicester 5-2 in the League Cup and drew 1-1 with Chelsea at the weekend, currently sitting 13th in the Premier League.
