Saturday horse racing tips
- DONCASTER
1.50: Look Back Smiling 11/1 each-way (1pt)
2.25: Marshman 7/2 (1pt)
3.35: Thunder Run 5/1 each-way (1.5pts)
Look Back Smiling
The return of the flat often sees a tough couple of months punting, especially for favourite backers.
There’s a few things to consider which includes: finding proper value, form when fresh, course form, potential form at this time of year before and finding those at bigger prices that can place in these each-way races.
One who fits the bill and also looks at a dangerous weight now, is Look Back Smiling.
He had a small break within the summer to return in September and only face soft ground in five straight runs.
He won’t mind firmer ground which at the moment is only good to soft.
But he’s also run well fresh on three occasions along with plenty of experience for a five-year-old and also a dangerous 11/1 price.
Brandon Wilkie has a great strike rate coming into this to also help boost chances.
Marshman
Marshman was a close second in this last year and looks to be benefiting greatly from being gelded as well as having a wind op not long after.
He returned on the all-weather looking better than ever with two wins and a second place so doesn’t need to have a run to brush off the cobwebs potentially like some of his rivals.
7/2 looks a solid chance and price for this Karl Burke-trained gelding ridden by Clifford Lee.
Thunder Run
22 runners star in the Lincoln, the heritage handicap over 1m to help mark the return of the flat season.
Prices start at 5/1 for this race which can be rare but trainer Karl Burke looks to have a very busy start to the flat season with a potential flush of wins on opening day at Doncaster.
Recent winners have been big prices though, with 28/1, 18/1 and 33/1 and a range of winning trainers and jockeys.
Recent runnings also suggest that there’s something to be said about the unexposed runners who could be thriving now coming into the new season at just four-years-old.
In fact, five of the last eight winners have been four, with another two victors just five-years-old.
That said, Thunder Run is just 5/1 but looks a solid bet considering he’s one of just a few to go well on good ground.
He’s still got some potential going forward and looks like one that can improve nicely on his first run of the season even in this big field.
