Saturday racing tips
- KELSO
1.10: Helnwein 7/4 (1.5pts)
2.20: Fontana Ellissi 33/1 each-way (1pt)
2.55: Swinger – Vanderpoel & Chart Topper (1pt) - NEWBURY
1.55: Nap Hand 5/1 each-way (1.5pts)
Helnwein
Real Stone is one to go against this time around as he not only won last time out so faces a tough rise in the weights, but also the ground doesn’t look ideal for the ten-year-old.
Helnwein has run with great credit this season placing behind Telepathique at Warwick in November which has turned out to be great form.
He then ran as favourite behind Vincenzo, Tedley and The Famous Five, all while giving away plenty of weight and each of those have gone on to run well since too.
The seven-year-old went for a wind op soon after tamely finishing fourth when seen again in January and could be back with a vengeance given he could be very well weighted.
Fontana Ellissi
Going for a big each-way play on this race on the basis that Benjamin Macey taking off another 7lb from Fontana Ellissi should help provide the nine-year-old with at least a place finish.
Ace Of Spades and Mr Bramley are both very impressive and have great form but the Samuel Drinkwater-trained horse could provide a shock.
He’s only been seen three times since running well at Cheltenham back in November 2022.
With his last four runs coming over 3m a slight drop in trip could well be the ticket to better placings.
Better yet he’s been dropped a total of 8lb since than decent run at Cheltenham when running just behind Annual Invictus.
He can also be excused for running eighth on nine last time at Newbury on what was his first start for 380 days and could be much better as he has before on his second start of the season.
Cheltenham Festival tips
Vanderpoel & Chart Topper
This 2m2f hurdle contest is wide open in the betting, as you could really make a case for all of them.
Willie Mullins has a 50% strike-rate when sending his hurdlers over to Britain this season and so Chart Topper needs serious consideration.
Chart Topper has already won in Britain this season too, beating Peso by over four lengths comfortably in January.
Jockey Ben Jones has an incredible 62% strike-rate in the last two weeks with 13 wins from 21 runners.
While trainer Ben Pauling has a 50% strike-rate in the last two weeks with 11 winners from 22 runners.
It’s very possible the horse they combine on Vanderpoel, is ready to pounce and confirm his ability – making them both a great option for a swinger bet.
Vanderpoel is unbeaten under rules winning a point to point in November, a maiden hurdle in January and a novice event in early February.
Nap Hand
Went close behind La Pinsonniere last time out and that has shown he could be very well weighted considering it was just his second start over hurdles, yet was carrying 7lb more than a horse rated 7lb higher.
That swing in the weights even in a new contest should be enough to show what he’s capable of especially on his third start over hurdles, with the experience sometimes needed for many horses to go forward.
