Scottie Scheffler had a witty response to Rory McIlroy’s comments about his recent injury.

World no.1 Scheffler will make a delayed start to the 2025 season at Pebble Beach on Thursday after undergoing hand surgery at the end of 2024.

The two-time Masters champion cut himself on a broken wine glass while cooking ravioli on Christmas Day.

McIlroy was asked about the bizarre incident on Wednesday and questioned why Scheffler was in the kitchen.

“Like, why are you cooking yourself? I was hoping it was going to be more of a fun story than that,” he said.

“But you know, we were together in Vegas on December 17 and played that match with Brooks [Koepka] and Bryson [DeChambeau].

“So firstly, just concerned and hoping he was OK, and it sounds like he is.

“It’s good that he’s tearing it up this week, but yeah, get a chef.”

Those comments were put to Scheffler at his press conference immediately afterwards.

“I got a chef,” he replied. “Her name is Meredith [Scheffler’s wife]. She’s pretty cute.”

The 28-year-old was forced to miss the opening two events on his PGA Tour calendar during a month of recovery.

However, he is not planning to add any extra events to his schedule to make up for it.

“Missing those two events is not fun; I enjoy playing them,” he said.

“Just because I missed two I don’t want to change the flow and cadence to my schedule. If I feel like I want to add one to get some extra reps in, I will.”

Scheffler spent the entire calendar year of 2024 in a world of his own at the top of the game.

The American won seven of the 19 events he played and only finished outside the top ten on three occasions.

It pocketed Scheffler a cool $30million, plus $25m on top for winning the FedEx Cup bonus, and firmly cemented his status as today’s greatest player by a country mile.

As of January 20, Scheffler had spent 123 weeks at world no.1, taking him past McIlroy’s entire career tally of 122 weeks.

Most weeks spent at world no.1

Rank Player Weeks Majors
1 Tiger Woods 683 15
2 Greg Norman 331 2
3 Dustin Johnson 135 2
4 Scottie Scheffler 124 2
5 Rory McIlroy 122 4
6 Nick Faldo 97 6
7 Seve Ballesteros 61 5
8 Luke Donald 56 0
9 Jon Rahm 52 2
10 Jason Day 51 1

When asked about any concerns over the hand surgery on his form, Scheffler insisted he was not worried.

“It’s one of those deals where immediately after it happened I was mad at myself because I was like ‘gosh, that’s so stupid’, but you just don’t think about it when you’re in the moment,” the 13-time PGA Tour winner added.

“It really wasn’t terrible, but I knew I kind of messed something up just because the way my hand wasn’t really moving much and if I did move it, it hurt pretty badly. So I kind of knew something was up.”
