Serbia vs Switzerland predictions

Serbia and Switzerland, who meet on matchday three of the Nations League, had different experiences at Euro 2024.

It was yet another disappointing tournament showing for Serbia, who were one of the eight teams eliminated in the group phase. They only lost 1-0 to England in their first outing, but draws with Slovenia (1-1) and Denmark (0-0) were not enough to extend their participation.

Despite having numerous quality attackers at their disposal, Serbia only managed to score one goal across 270 minutes of football – and that was a header from a corner in second-half stoppage time to avoid defeat by Slovenia.

Switzerland had a much more enjoyable summer. They laid down a market from the get-go, as an excellent all-round display helped them to a 3-1 victory over Hungary.

The Swiss booked their spot in the round of 16 with back-to-back 1-1 draws with Scotland and Germany, thus ending the group stage unbeaten.

In fact, they did not lose in 90 minutes at all in Germany. Switzerland produced one of the performances of the tournament in beating Italy 2-0, before England required a penalty shoot-out to get past them in the quarter-finals.

Switzerland are hoping to build on that achievement by also reaching the quarters of the 2024/25 Nations League, for which they will need to finish in the top two of their group.

Right now, though, they are propping up a section which includes Spain and Denmark as well as Serbia. Switzerland lost to both of those teams in September, putting them under pressure to pick up a first win of the campaign on Saturday.

Serbia, for their part, have a point to their name courtesy of a surprise but hard-earned 0-0 draw with Spain. That was a fine result for Dragan Stojkovic’s side, but they were then beaten 2-0 by Denmark a few days later.

Serbia are the underdogs in this group, but a victory over Switzerland would keep their hopes of a top-two finish alive at the midway point of the campaign. This is a crunch clash for both sides, who are the main relegation candidates as things stand.

Serbia vs Switzerland betting tips

Both Serbia and Switzerland will be targeting a win when they exchange fire on Saturday evening.

Switzerland to win

Several Switzerland stalwarts decided to end their international careers after Euro 2024.

Yann Sommer, Fabian Schar and Xherdan Shaqiri have all stepped away from the national team, with the likes of Ricardo Rodriguez, Granit Xhaka and Manuel Akanji now three of the most experienced (and important) members of the group.

Serbia have been dealt a blow with the withdrawal from the squad of Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.

Dusan Tadic has retired, meanwhile, with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Filip Kostic among the other absentees.

Switzerland are a better side than Serbia all things considered. Yakin showed himself to be an astute coach at the Euros and he can inspire his country to victory at the Dubocica Stadium.

Tip Switzerland to win at 9/5 with Paddy Power

Over 2.5 goals

Stojkovic is an attack-minded manager, but that does not necessarily mean his team scores lots of goals – as we saw at the European Championship. Serbia also failed to find the back of the net in the September international break.

On the plus side, Serbia have improved defensively. They kept a clean sheet against Spain last month and almost did so against England at the Euros.

On this occasion, though, we anticipate attacks getting the better of defences. That is in large part because both teams will really be pushing for a win here.

Serbia have home advantage behind them and, given they face Spain again next, Stojkovic’s side will be targeting a victory when they face Yakin’s team.

So too will their opponents Switzerland, who cannot afford to fall any further behind the top two. That should result in an entertaining match with at least three goals in total.

Choose over 2.5 goals at 6/5 with Paddy Power

Breel Embolo to score any time

Breel Embolo is now established as Switzerland’s first-choice striker, but he could do with improving his goal record for the national team.

Embolo, who is still only 27, has made the net ripple just 15 times in 69 appearances for his country.

He was generally impressive at Euro 2024 given he had only just returned from a serious knee injury, scoring against both Hungary and England.

However, Embolo was kept quiet by both Denmark and Spain in the Nations League last month. Switzerland could really do with him returning to form here.

Embolo is yet to score for Monaco in 2024/25, but he is the leading contender to find the net among Yakin’s players.
