Sheffield Wednesday v Sunderland prediction

Sunderland’s hopes of automatic promotion this season have hit a huge stumbling block in the last few weeks after back to back defeats has left them with just one win in their last four Championship matches.

Regis le Bris’ side’s shock 1-0 loss at home against relegation battling Hull last weekend now leaves them eight points behind second placed Sheffield United in the battle for the top two, leaving them needing a long win streak between now and the end of the season to have any chance of an automatic return to the top flight.

The Black Cats head into Friday night’s tie with only three wins in their last nine matches in all competitions, and have won only three of their last 11 away from home in all competitions, leaving them with a slight uphill battle to get back to winning ways on Friday night.

However, they take on a Sheffield Wednesday side who are also out of form after losing three of their last four matches which has halted their charge for a top six finish and now leaves them down in the bottom half of the table.

Danny Rohl’s side’s recent record of just one win in their last five games has seen them drop 13th place, with only goal difference separating them from the top half of the table and only six points between them and top six, leaving a win on Friday taking them back within touching distance of the play-offs.

However, only Derby and Hull have picked up fewer points at home in the Championship this season than the Owls, who have won only five of their 17 home games and are without a win in their last four games at Hillsborough.

Two out of form teams collide in Friday night’s Championship game, but I expect the Black Cats to get back to winning ways in what will likely be a scrappy game, though the away side’s quality should shine through, also having more to play for as they look to get their automatic promotion chase back on track – I’m predicting a 2-1 away win.

Sheffield Wednesday v Sunderland betting tips

Borja Sainz and Joel Piroe are the only two Championship players with more goals than Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor in all competitions this season, with four goals in his last six games taking him to 12 for the season.

Sheffield Wednesday have lost three of their last four games and are without a win in their last four at Hillsborough, while the Black Cats have lost two on the spin but have won two of their last three away from home.
