Dec 21st 2024: Cricket Carnival – Soroti

You can’t tell the story of the Soroti Cricket Academy without telling the story of its founder Felix Musana. The money trail took Musana to Soroti, far away from the privilege of life in the city where he could easily go to Lugogo Cricket Oval for a net session.

On a random evening jog, he happened to come across a group of girls trying to play a game close to his heart and that was the light bulb moment for him to make sure he does something for just those girls.

If you connect the dots backwards from just four girls to over 1000 girls to date is how far the Soroti Cricket Academy has grown.

The academy was formally founded in 2014 and since then, the family has grown to become a not-for-profit organization that not just introduces cricket to beginners but an entity that offers employment, social support, and education scholarships.

The story of one man has become a story for a whole community, the Soroti Cricket Academy has stood out for producing some of the finest girls featured for the Victoria Pearls and Baby Victoria Pearls.

The girl child in Soroti doesn’t have the same privileges as the boy child, and parents have to make some hard choices among competing needs. The Soroti Cricket Academy consciously decided to focus on the girl child while not completely ignoring the boys. This decision helped save many girls who are part of their programs from bad societal vices, early marriage, and early pregnancies. The continuous involvement of the girls in their programs such as coaching programs in primary schools and communities has helped raise the profile of the game in the region.

Looking back from lacking even a playing surface, the Soroti Cricket Academy now has at least three cricket facilities that they use for their activities throughout the year. Soroti Cricket Academy has hosted the last two editions of the annual Girls School Cricket Week which have both been won by the home teams.

The academy programs now involve over 18 primary schools and 8 secondary schools in Soroti, the academy supports and facilitates the coaches who visit these schools every week. During the school holidays, the academy organizes beginner’s sessions at their city ground where little ones are introduced to the game of cricket at an early age.

The Celebrations will start with a 10th Anniversary Dinner on December 20th where they will appreciate all their partners on this journey from the parents, volunteers, teachers, and players. It will be followed by a cricket festival on December 21st that will feature cricket games, entertainment, and performances from celebrity DJs and musicians.

The journey of “Building Dreams” continues for the next 10 years but the here and now is a celebration of how far the academy has come from just four girls to over 1000 direct beneficiaries.
