South Africa clinch double at 2024 Africa Netball Cup

2024 Africa Netball Cup:

Women final: South Africa 65-50 Uganda
Men final: South Africa 60-39 Eswatini

South Africa won both the men and women trophies at the 2024 Africa Netball Cup played in the MTC Dome, Swakopmund municipality in Namibia.

For the women, South Africa Proteas overcame Uganda She Cranes; thanks to the fluidity of their game from defence, center to the ring.

Uganda started the game with towering Mary Cholhok Nuba at goalshooting role and skipper Irene Eyaru as goal-attacker.

Others were; Gloria Aya (wing defence), Faridah Kadondi (goalkeeper), Sandrah Nambirige (goaldefence) and Mercy Batamuliza (wing defence).

Van Der Berg Elmere, a 6 feet plus goal shooter contributed a lion’s share of the goals scored with goal-attacker Smith Nicola adding in the others.

South Africa opened the opening quarter with a 4-point lead; 16-12.

By half-time, South Africa had extended the lead to 6 points; 30-24.

In the third quarter, the Proteas further built their stamina and grip to the game with a 50-33 score-line.

Heading to the final quarter of the game, all signs were eminent South Africa was destined for a killer.

The difference after the fourth quarter swell to 15 points with the Proteas winning 65-50.

This was South Africa’s fourth title following earlier triumphs in 2013, 2019 and 2021.

The year 2024 was double joy for South Africa following success for their male side who won 60-39 over Eswatini.

South Africa men won all the four quarters; 17-12, 32-23, 46-29 and 60-39.

Uganda did not field a men’s team.

It has been a fair tournament for us with lots of learning points that we take home as we improve our game further. I thank the players, fellow coaches, administrators, media and fans who have rallied behind us from the start to the end of the tournament.
