Southampton v Stoke predictions

Southampton will enjoy a welcome break from Premier League opposition tonight as they welcome Championship opposition to St Mary’s Stadium.

Russell Martin’s side have endured a torrid start to the season on their return to the top flight, currently sitting rock bottom of the table with just one point from their nine matches so far.

The Saints head into tonight’s match having lost each of their last four matches, though they enjoyed success in the Carabao Cup this season, with their only two victories in all competitions this campaign coming in the tournament.

The south coast side have already seen off Championship opposition once in the competition this season, beating Cardiff 5-3 in a thriller in the Welsh capital, before beating Everton on penalties at Goodison Park.

Victory tonight will put the Saints in the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup for the fourth time in the last 10 years, with their best finish in that time being runners up to Manchester United in 2017.

Standing in their way of a place in the last eight is a Stoke side whose four match unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United.

Narcis Pelach has had a tough start to life in Staffordshire since joining as manager from Norwich, winning just one of his seven matches in charge so far, which leaves the Potters down in 19th in the Championship table, just a point above the relegation zone.

Stoke won this competition back in 1972, their only major trophy to date, and will be looking for their second appearance in the quarter finals in four years as they dream dreams of adding to that trophy tally early next year.

Southampton have won only one of their last six matches against Stoke, who have only lost once at St Mary’s in their last seven visits, including wins in three of their last four.

Changes can be expected on either side with both teams currently prioritising trying to stay in their current divisions, which should leave Southampton as strong favourites with their strength in depth likely to shine through, a 2-0 win being my prediction.

Southampton v Stoke betting tips

18-year-old Tyler Dibling has earned many plaudits across the season for his performances on the right wing for Southampton, scoring his first goal for the club in their 1-1 draw with Ipswich last month.

After only playing 45 minutes of their defeat against Manchester City on the weekend, the teenager could be in line to start tonight, and will be relishing the chance to play against opposition, who should be weaker on paper.

Stoke have scored just one league goal away from home all season, so a goal at the home of Premier League opposition this week would be a surprise.

Adam Armstrong was the Saints’ stand out player last season, top scoring with 24 goals to his name including the one to send them to the Premier League in the play-off final but has started just three league games so far this season and is yet to find the back of the net.

The 27-year-old will likely be in line to start tonight as he looks to find his form once again, and a drop in level of opposition may well help him do that.
