Southampton vs Ipswich Town predictions
We are still in the early stages of the 2024/25 Premier League season, but the pressure is on both Southampton and Ipswich Town ahead of their head-to-head clash this weekend.
Neither promoted team has tasted success yet this term. Ipswich have two points to their name courtesy of hard-earned draws with Fulham and Brighton & Hove Albion, while Southampton are still pointless after four rounds of fixtures.
As their respective point tallies indicate, Ipswich have more cause for optimism based on what we have seen so far.
Their two defeats came at the hands of Liverpool and Manchester City, while they showed plenty of battling qualities in that pair of draws with Fulham and Brighton.
The underlying numbers do not make for great reading, with Ipswich rock-bottom of the expected goals difference table (a statistic which measures the quality of chances a team creates and concedes). But at this early stage of proceedings, we must take the opposition into account – and Ipswich’s set of fixtures have probably been tougher than anyone else’s.
As for Southampton, they have been beaten by Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Manchester United.
Russell Martin would no doubt have highlighted the Forest and Brentford games in particular as opportunities for his team to get at least a point on the board, but the Saints were second best in both encounters.
They are struggling at both ends of the field. Only Tottenham Hotspur are averaging more possession than Southampton, yet Martin’s men have not used the ball well enough. Their policy of playing out from the back at all costs has at times proved costly too, leading some supporters to question why Martin is not willing to inject a little more pragmatism.
This feels like a must-win match for Southampton. At the risk of stating the obvious, five defeats from five at the beginning of the campaign would represent a dismal start for last season’s Championship play-off winners.
Ipswich did the double over Southampton last term and they will be looking to inflict more pain on Martin and co. on Saturday.

Will one of Southampton or Ipswich Town get their first win of the season in this one?
Ipswich to win – 33/16 (VBET)
There have been a few murmurs of discontent around St Mary’s Stadium of late and Ipswich can use that to their advantage.
Kieran McKenna is a more adaptable coach than Martin and we should see a mix of tactics from his team this weekend.
Ipswich will look to press high when there is an opportunity to do so, especially having witnessed Southampton’s build-up issues in recent weeks.

But they are also capable of sitting back and digging in, qualities we saw against Brighton last time out. They will allow Southampton to control the ball for periods of this match, before breaking quickly when possession changes hands.
There is unlikely to be much between these two teams, but we fancy Ipswich to come out on top in this battle of the promoted clubs.
Tip Ipswich to win at 33/16 with VBET
Under 2.5 goals – 21/20 (VBET)
Southampton had only the 14th-best defensive record in the Championship last season, so it is not surprising that they are struggling to keep the ball out of their own net at the highest level.
The Saints are conceding an average of two goals per game, which is less than ideal when you consider their attack is not yet functioning as Martin would want.
Southampton have only made the net bulge once up to now, while Ipswich are the second-lowest scorers in the division with two goals.
There could also be some nerves on display, particularly from the Saints. Given their opponents’ predicament, Ipswich will set out to frustrate them as their first objective.
All of which suggests we will not be treated to an open, end-to-end, high-scoring encounter on the south coast. Goals could be few and far between when this duo butt heads.

Liam Delap to score any time – 12/5 (VBET)
Liam Delap has shown signs of promise at the beginning of the season.
He has started all four of Ipswich’s games up to now and was responsible for one of the two goals they have scored, as Delap (whose father is the former Stoke City midfielder Rory) struck in the 1-1 draw with Fulham.
The 21-year-old, who came through the Manchester City academy, will lead the line once more on Saturday.
Delap is a good finisher, as evidenced by the fact he outperformed his xG on loan at Hull City in the Championship last term.
His movement and ball-carrying will also cause Southampton problems in this crunch clash between two relegation candidates.
