A local derby takes place in the second semi final of the Nations League as neighbours Spain and France continue their fierce rivalry in Stuttgart on Thursday night as they compete for a place in the final.
European champions and defending Nations League champions Spain will head into Thursday’s semi final as the favourites to make it through to Sunday night’s final in Munich, sealing their place in the last four by beating the Netherlands on penalties in the quarter finals back in March.
Luis de la Fuente’s side make the trip to Germany unbeaten in their last 23 competitive matches in all competitions, last tasting defeat against Scotland in Euro 2024 qualifying in the first international break after the 2022 World Cup.
France also needed a penalty shoot out to book their place in Thursday’s semi final after coming back from a 2-0 first leg defeat in Split to progress against the previous edition’s runners up Croatia.

Didier Deschamps is approaching his 13th and final season in charge of France, in a tenure which has seen triumphs on both the World Cup and Nations League, beating the Spanish in the final of this competition four years ago.
Both Spain and France won their groups in the league phase of the Nations League earlier this season, the former winning five of their six matches and qualifying with relative ease, while France only secured top spot on goal difference after a 3-1 win in Milan on the final night.
The two nations last met less than 12 months ago in the semi final of Euro 2024, with Spain coming from behind to win 2-1 en route to being crowned champions of Europe for the fourth time.
Spain will be aiming to become the first team to successfully defend their Nations League title and lift the trophy in consecutive campaigns, while both nations will be aiming to become the first team to win the competition on more than one occasion.
