Spain vs Serbia predictions

Spain were dealt an unwelcome surprise when they began their 2024/25 Nations League campaign against Serbia last month.

Widely expected to make light work of their opponents, the reigning European champions instead stumbled to a 0-0 draw in Belgrade.

It was an excellent result for Serbia, who had little to cheer at Euro 2024 after being knocked out in the group stage.

Spain have since taken control of their League A group, however, and they are now looking down at the other three teams from the summit of the standings.

La Roja followed up that goalless draw with Serbia with a 4-1 thrashing of Switzerland, which came despite the fact they had 10 men for 70 minutes of the match.

In their most recent encounter, Spain edged out Denmark 1-0 to move into top spot. Martin Zubimendi’s goal in the 79th minute finally broke the Danes’ resistance after they had successfully shut out Spain for most of the encounter.

“Winning is one thing but we have things to improve before playing Serbia,” admitted Luis de la Fuente afterwards. “Today we lost a little bit of our criteria with the play. We could have been more intense [and] shown more tempo in our passing.”

A top-two finish will be sufficient to reach the quarter-finals of the revamped Nations League, but Spain will not want to finish anywhere other than first.

Their fate is in their own hands. A victory over Serbia on Tuesday and triumphs over Denmark and Switzerland next month would see Spain advance in top spot. For now, though, they are only a point clear of the Danes in second.

Serbia, for their part, have been more competitive than most anticipated so far. They picked up that valuable point against Spain, and while a 2-0 loss to Denmark followed, Serbia ran out 2-0 winners against Switzerland on Saturday.

Dragan Stojkovic’s charges are third in the group, but a two-point deficit to Denmark in second means they are not out of the running for the quarter-finals yet.

A third-place finish would see them involved in the promotion/relegation play-offs, but Serbia are at least well positioned to avoid finishing bottom and suffering automatic demotion to League B.

Spain vs Serbia betting tips

Serbia travel to Spain to do battle with the reigning European champions on Tuesday.

Spain/Spain half-time/full-time

Serbia did a good defensive job on Spain when the pair faced off last month. La Roja had 21 shots but only five of those found the target. The expected goals was only narrowly in Spain’s favour, 1.39 to 1.24.

Denmark also defended with discipline and resolve when they faced the kings of the continent last time out.

Serbia will look to replicate that on Tuesday, but it is easier said than done – particularly away from home.

Stojkovic’s side are not the best travellers. Their four points in the group were all collected in front of their own fans. They have not won a competitive game outside Serbia in over a year.

Spain will aim to make a fast start in Cordoba, and we like their chances of making a breakthrough before the interval.

Spain to win to nil

We can expect a rearguard action from Serbia in this game. They will sit deep, pack men behind the ball and look to make life difficult for Spain.

Denmark showed the way for most of their recent meeting with De la Fuente’s side. The problem is, their defensive exploits came at the expense of any sort of attacking threat.

Denmark mustered just 0.1 expected goals in that 1-0 loss. In other words, on average they would have failed to score in nine out of 10 games against Spain.

Serbia will find it difficult to get sustained possession in advanced areas of the pitch, so it will be difficult for them to create clear-cut chances from open play.

Spain have conceded only one goal in three games and we reckon another clean sheet beckons in this one.

Joselu to score any time

Alvaro Morata and Joselu are Spain’s two main options at centre-forward.

The former got the nod against Denmark but was withdrawn in the 78th minute, just before Zubimendi’s goal, with Joselu taking his place.

The latter will hope he has done enough to earn an opportunity from the start when la Roja take on Serbia.

Joselu left Real Madrid in the summer and is now plying his trade in Qatar, but he remains a part of De la Fuente’s squad.

His penalty-box prowess will come in handy against a Serbia team that is set to defend in a low block.
