Uganda’s female Squash team won bronze at the 2024 Trustco Africa Senior Championship that was held at the Wanderers Squash courts in Windhoek city, Namibia.
This was the first ever medal for the ladies team in history of this championship.
The team was comprised of three players Elizabeth Musiimenta, Safinah Mugide and Shifah Nantambi under the coach Micheal Raymond Kawooya.
Nigeria emerged top with gold as the host country Namibia came second to take silver.
Uganda scooped bronze after finishing third in the championship.
The other participating countries included Zambia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The Uganda Squash Rackets Association had sent a delegation of 7 players on the team in Namibia comprising of three ladies and four men.
The male representatives had Paul Kasirye Kadoma, Ivan Wasswa, Oscar Mugabi and Micheal Raymond Kawooya, who doubled as a coach.
The men team finished a respectable fifth place out of seven countries.
Nigeria also won gold in men, Zambia took silver and Zimbabwe scooped bronze.
“A big thanks to the National Council of Sports and our mother body Uganda Squash Rackets Association and the players as well as the coaches. It was brave effort” a statement from the Uganda Squash Rackets Association read.
Isa Bbale (the vice president of the Uganda Squash Rackets Association) and the general secretary Shifah Nantambi accompanied the team as officials.
Bbale and Nantambi also graced the 2024 Squash Federation of Africa Annual General Meeting.
The Namibia Squash Association (NSA) was facilitated by Trustco Group Holdings to a tune of $4,417.45 (about Ug.Shs 16, 204,855.15).
The 2025 edition will be hosted by Uganda in November.
