Stuttgart vs Bayer Leverkusen predictions

In March 2024, Bayer Leverkusen pulled off one of the dramatic comebacks that came to characterise their season.

Trailing 4-2 on aggregate to Qarabag with only 18 minutes of their Europa League last-16 tie remaining, Leverkusen looked to be on their way out of the competition.

Then Jeremie Frimpong popped up with a goal to give them hope. Leverkusen kept pushing and Patrik Schick levelled things up in the third minute of stoppage time. Extra time beckoned.

And then it did not. Remarkably, Leverkusen scored once more in stoppage time through Schick. The BayArena erupted and Xabi Alonso’s side celebrated their progression to the quarter-finals.

Leverkusen were unable to repeat the trick earlier this week. With Bayern Munich arriving at the BayArena with a 3-0 aggregate advantage behind them, their task was much harder this time around. Even Hercules would have thought twice about taking it on.

Unfortunately for Leverkusen, they ultimately exited the Champions League with a whimper. A 2-0 home defeat in the second leg meant they were beaten 5-0 on aggregate.

“The Champions League is a competition where you can’t make mistakes and we made too many,” Alonso admitted. “We needed something spectacular, but it didn’t work out. The performance was good. There was no lack of quality, it was a lack of efficiency.”

All in all it was another disappointing 90 minutes for Leverkusen, whose loss to Werder Bremen three days earlier put a further dent in their already-slim Bundesliga title chances.

Bayern were beaten by Bochum last weekend, so Alonso’s men would have closed the gap to top spot to five points had they emerged victorious. As it is, Bayern still have a healthy eight-point buffer in top spot as the business end of the season approaches.

Leverkusen must keep fighting until the championship crown is mathematically out of reach, but there is a danger that their campaign peters out from here.

Leverkusen are still in the DFB-Pokal and are the favourites to win that competition, but no one at the club wanted to only have the cup to play for before the March international break.

Stuttgart will aim to compound Leverkuen’s woes in this upcoming clash as they continue their battle for a top-four finish. RB Leipzig vs Borussia Dortmund might draw more attention, but this could be the game of the Bundesliga weekend.

Stuttgart vs Bayer Leverkusen betting tips

Stuttgart will do battle with Bayer Leverkusen in a Bundesliga clash this weekend.

Stuttgart or draw

Alonso must do everything he can to prevent Bayer Leverkusen’s season fizzling out.

You never know, a shock Bayern Munich defeat by Union Berlin this weekend would give the champions a glimmer of hope. Leverkusen must be ready to pounce just in case Bayern collapse out of the blue.

That is easier said than done, though. Leverkusen have lost three games on the bounce and the players will be feeling low after their exit from the Champions League.

Florian Wirtz, Leverkusen’s best and most influential player, is out injured for a few weeks, further weakening the side.

Stuttgart have understandably dropped off from their second-place finish last term and they are not in great form themselves, but we expect the hosts to raise their game here.

Over 2.5 goals

For better or worse, Stuttgart have been a fun watch in recent weeks. A 2-2 draw with Holstein Kiel last weekend was the fifth time in their last six Bundesliga games that three or more goals were scored.

Sebastian Hoeness doubtless wants his team to tighten up at the back, but he will be pleased with Stuttgart’s record of having scored in nine of their last 10 top-flight encounters.

Bayer Leverkusen will not have it easy defensively against opponents that still carry a real threat in the final third even after losing their erstwhile top scorer, Serhou Guirassy, last summer.

Leverkusen have not been firing on all cylinders in attack of late, drawing a blank five times in their last eight fixtures.

On Sunday, though, we anticipate an entertaining affair at the MHP Arena.

Nick Woltemade to score any time

Stuttgart have done a good job of sharing the goals around following Guirassy’s departure to Borussia Dortmund.

None of their players has yet reached double figures in the Bundesliga, but Ermedin Demirovic, Deniz Undav and Nick Woltemade have shared 24 goals between them.

Woltemade only became a regular starter just prior to the winter break but he has caught the eye since then.

The 23-year-old has scored seven Bundesliga goals since the middle of December and he is now one of the first names on Hoeness’ team sheet.

Bayer Leverkusen will have their hands full in attempting to keep him quiet.
