Stuttgart vs Sparta Prague predictions

Stuttgart and Sparta Prague had different results on matchday one of the Champions League, but both will have cherished the moment.

The joy Sparta will have derived from their 3-0 victory over Red Bull Salzburg is self-explanatory. It was a fantastic night for the Czechia outfit, who had to do things the hard way to even reach the league phase.

Indeed, despite winning their domestic league title last term, Sparta began their continental campaign in the second qualifying round.

Aggregate triumphs over Shamrock Rovers, Steaua Bucharest and Malmo were required before Sparta could take their place among the 36 teams in the tournament proper.

Back in the Champions League for the first time since 2005/06, Sparta wasted little time in making their mark. They were 3-0 up before the hour mark and held on for a clean sheet to end matchday one in sixth place in the standings.

In a different way, Stuttgart will have enjoyed their first Champions League encounter since 2009/10.

That was in large part because no one really saw it coming. The season before last, Stuttgart were a relegation play-off away from entering the 2.Bundesliga. After surviving that two-legged tie against Hamburg, Stuttgart went on to finish as runners-up in Germany’s top tier last term.

It was also because of the venue: the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, home of the reigning European champions and the most successful side in the history of this competition.

Stuttgart certainly did not disgrace themselves against Real Madrid. They lost 3-1 in the end, but the score was 1-1 up until the 83rd minute. They created plenty of chances and, on another night, could easily have avoided defeat by Carlo Ancelotti’s charges.

Still, Stuttgart could do with a win here, regardless of how good their performance is. Home games will be important to Sebastian Hoeness’ men, who face a tricky trip to Juventus on matchday three in October.

Stuttgart warmed up for this game with a 2-2 draw with Wolfsburg, a result which extended their unbeaten run domestically to five matches. The target now is a first victory in the Champions League since Stuttgart beat Unirea Urziceni in December 2009.

Stuttgart vs Sparta Prague betting tips

Stuttgart host Sparta Prague in the Champions League league phase on Tuesday night.

Stuttgart to win and over 2.5 goals

Stuttgart will struggle to finish in the top two of the Bundesliga this term, but they have already shown that last season was not a one-off.

Take for instance their magnificent 5-1 demolition of Borussia Dortmund the weekend before last. In the form of Serhou Guirassy, Stuttgart lost their best player to BVB over the summer. Yet they were superior to Nuri Sahin’s side in every department when they went head-to-head.

Stuttgart have not lost at home since October 2023. Even Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich failed to collect three points at the MHPArena last campaign (Leverkusen drew and Bayern left empty-handed).

Sparta Prague were hugely impressive against Red Bull Salzburg, but it will be tough for them to avoid defeat here.

Bear in mind, too, that Stuttgart’s eight games this season have averaged 4.63 goals, so defences are unlikely to come out on top.

Go for a Stuttgart win and over 2.5 goals at 5/6 with SBK

Sparta Prague to have over 2.5 cards

If Sparta Prague are to pull off another shock on Tuesday, they will need to disrupt Stuttgart’s flow as much as possible.

The Germans are an aggressive, energetic team who like to press high up the pitch and force turnovers in advanced areas. Sparta will therefore go more direct in a bid to bypass that collective closing-down.

When they do not have possession, the visitors must ensure they do not allow Stuttgart too much time on the ball. In other words, Lars Friis will encourage his players to match Stuttgart’s intensity.

Whether or not they are good enough to do that away from home remains to be seen, but Sparta’s physicality could see them pick up a few cards.

It is interesting to note that their seven Champions League games in 2024/25 (including qualifiers) have produced a total of 17 bookings, around 2.5 per match.

Deniz Undav to score any time

Stuttgart would have loved to have kept hold of the aforementioned Guirassy, but that was always going to be difficult after the Guinea international scored 30 goals in as many games last time out.

Deniz Undav also chipped in with 19 goals last term, prompting Stuttgart to make his loan move from Brighton & Hove Albion permanent.

Undav has started the current campaign brightly, making the net bulge five times in his last four appearances.

The Germany international is full of confidence and we like his chances of scoring in a fifth consecutive game on Tuesday.
