Switzerland vs Serbia predictions

After a positive showing at Euro 2024, Switzerland would have hoped to be in the mix for a place in the Nations League quarter-finals at this stage of the campaign.

Instead, Murat Yakin’s team are battling to avoid relegation to League B, a fate that will befall them unless they can collect all three points on Saturday.

Not much was expected of Switzerland heading into last summer’s European Championship. But right from their very first game, the Swiss showed that they were ready to compete.

A comfortable 3-1 victory over Hungary represented a fine start, before Switzerland battled to a 1-1 draw with Scotland.

They came close to beating hosts Germany on matchday three, only for Nicklas Fullkrug to notch a late equaliser in second-half stoppage time.

Switzerland’s most impressive performance followed in the round of 16, as they completely dominated Italy and ran out 2-0 winners over their southerly neighbours.

Their adventure eventually came to an end in the quarter-finals, but an unconvincing England side required penalties to finally shake off the Swiss.

Yakin was no doubt hoping to build on the promise his side showed in the summer during this Nations League campaign, but Switzerland have been below par since the start.

They kicked things off with a disappointing 2-0 defeat by Denmark, before being thrashed 4-1 at home by a Spain side that had to play with 10 men for 70 minutes.

A 2-0 loss to Serbia was perhaps the most disappointing result of all. Switzerland finally got off the mark with a 2-2 draw against Denmark last time out, but they still need to win Saturday’s showdown with Serbia to stand a chance of avoiding automatic relegation to League B.

Head-to-head record is the first tiebreaker in the Nations League. As we mentioned above, Serbia won the first meeting between these sides. That means a draw here would see Serbia avoid demotion.

However, Serbia are not yet out of the running for a top-two finish and qualification for the quarter-finals, so they too have every incentive to go all-out for a win. That makes this an intriguing encounter.

Switzerland vs Serbia betting tips

Switzerland can keep their survival hopes alive by getting the better of Serbia on Friday.

Switzerland to win

Switzerland have patently been below their best in the Nations League so far, but it is possible to argue they are slightly unfortunate to be stuck on one point.

Yakin’s charges almost drew 0-0 with Denmark in their first game despite spending almost half the game with 10 men.

Spain’s 4-1 win in Geneva flattered the European champions, while the Swiss created the better chances in both the 2-0 defeat by Serbia and the 2-2 draw with Denmark in October.

Expected goals does not tell us everything, but it is interesting to note that the xG data rates Switzerland as the second-best performing side in the group behind Spain.

That is one reason why we are backing them to get the job done against Serbia. Another is that home advantage is likely to be a factor against opponents who do not tend to travel well.

⚽ Tip Switzerland to win at 4/5 with 10bet ⚽

Over 2.5 goals

There have been 13 goals in the games involving Switzerland in this group, which works out at an average of 3.25 per 90 minutes. This particular wager would have paid out in both of their home matches to date.

Serbia’s four fixtures have featured only seven goals, which is slightly surprising given Dragan Stojkovic’s reputation as a manager who wants his team to attack even if it leaves them defensively open.

The nature of the group means Switzerland will be obliged to play on the front foot on Saturday evening.

Yakin will encourage his team to make a fast start, so Serbia may have to dig in for the first 30 minutes or so.

At some point, though, the visitors will have to come out and play, especially if they were to fall behind. There is reason to believe this will be an entertaining watch.

⚽ Go for over 2.5 goals at 6/5 with 10bet ⚽

Breel Embolo to score any time

Breel Embolo made his return to the international scene at Euro 2024 after several months out with a knee injury.

Given he had only just regained full fitness, the striker turned in some impressive displays in Germany.

He has had a slow start to the club campaign, though, scoring only two goals for Monaco in all competitions.

Embolo, who has won 72 caps for Switzerland at the age of 27, is a player who seems to really enjoy playing for his country.

He led the line against Denmark in Switzerland’s last match and will be determined to repay Yakin’s faith in him when Serbia head to Zurich.

⚽ Back Breel Embolo to score any time at 21/10 with 10bet ⚽
