Day one of Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire Meeting comes up on Thursday with a seven-race offering at Headquarters including the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes.
They race at Newmarket from 1.35-5.05, with the feature off at 3.20, and ground conditions are set to be ‘good’.
We’ve picked out a trio to follow at Newmarket on Thursday as the Cambridgeshire Meeting gets up and running.
Racing tips
2.45 Newmarket – Executive Decision
3.20 Newmarket – Monumental
4.30 Newmarket – Candyman Stan
2.45 Newmarket – British Stallion Studs EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap (Class 2, 6f)
Our first port of call is the Class 2 British Stallion Studs EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap over 6f in which Executive Decision is fancied to go well for Jamie and Saffie Osborne.
The Ardad filly won at Glorious Goodwood (6f, good to soft) last summer off a mark of 74 and carried her 6lb penalty to success at Chepstow (6f, good to soft) nine days later.
That got her a mark in the mid-90s and she was duly well-held in three further runs in the autumn.
There was encouragement on her comeback at Windsor (6f, good to firm) in May and she then ran well when fourth at Epsom (6f, good to soft) on Derby Day in June in a valuable handicap.
Her only start since saw her probably left with too much to do from the rear at Ascot (6f, good) in July as she finished fourth. She has been eased a further 2lb and is on a tempting mark now with conditions underfoot to suit.
3.20 Newmarket – Somerville Tattersall Stakes (Group 3, 7f)
The feature Somerville Tattersall Stakes sees unbeaten Diego Ventura looking to give Wathnan Racing another big winner but his Ascot novice success this month has taken some knocks already and he will need to step up considerably to deny Aidan O’Brien’s Monumental.
The Kingman colt is making good progress from run to run, winning a Gowran Park maiden (7f, good) on his third start earlier this month.
His lofty connections opted to head for Doncaster’s St Leger Festival and the Group 2 Champagne Stakes 11 days later and it nearly paid off as Monumental finished well to be second behind the uneaten Bay City Roller from the George Scott team.
They were well clear of the rest in that contest and that form – alongside a rating of 109 – makes Ryan Moore’s partner the one to beat as they drop in class.
4.30 Newmarket – Graham Budd Horseracing Memorabilia Handicap (Class 4, 1m4f)
Baltic made it five from five in handicaps at Newcastle (1m4½f) on the Tapeta in July but the Frankel colt had to work hard for that win and is 4lb higher now, while that Gosforth Park contest hasn’t worked out particularly well.
The top-weight has to give 9lb to Candyman Stan here, with Andrew Balding’s three-year-old gelding allotted an opening mark just 2lb below the Harry Charlton-trained favourite.
Candyman Stan made the most of a good opening to win in wide-margin fashion at Lingfield over this trip recently on the Polytrack, with Oisin Murphy in the plate there for the first time on his third start.
We didn’t learn a lot in that easy win, but he appears to have a good engine and is entitled to progress again on handicap bow.
