Bet of the day

Watford to beat Oxford @ 3/4

Watford were beaten 1-0 at Swansea on Wednesday evening, but the Hornets look like a solid bet to bounce back at home to Oxford United in front of the television cameras on Friday.

The Golden Boys remain in the top six in the Championship and that has largely been down to the excellent home form of Tom Cleverley’s men.

They have won five of their six second-tier home matches this term and that includes excellent Vicarage Road successes over Blackburn, Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Cleverley’s robust defence has conceded only four goals in eight home games this term and that’s bad news for a U’s side who have hit the net just eight times in their previous nine matches.

They picked up a big 1-0 win over Hull on Tuesday night, but that is the only win Des Buckingham’s men have managed in nine Championship contests and it came from only two shots on target.

Watford have scored 18 goals in eight Vicarage Road matches this term and the Hornets have the attack to down Oxford.

Special of the day

Morton to beat Ayr @ 13/5

Ayr United continue to feel the effects of a lengthy injury list, with prolific forward Anton Dowds the most notable absentee.

The Honest Men were turned over in tough conditions at Raith Rovers last Friday and Scott Brown’s side look to be heading for more disappointment.

Ayr managed only three shots on goal in a 2-0 defeat at Stark’s Park last week and it’s just three wins in eight games for them now.

Morton were hammered 6-0 at Falkirk last time out, but the Greenock side have been dealing with their own injury crisis.

However, there is good news on that front with Austin Samuels, Lamar Reynolds, Morgan Boyes and Ali Crawford set to return to the starting line-up on Friday night and boss Dougie Imrie also has Iain Wilson back from suspension.

The Ton have lost only two matches at Cappielow Park all season and a narrow 3-2 loss to Scottish Championship leaders Falkirk is a better indication of Morton’s level.

At 13/5 Morton look a bet to pick up a crucial three points on the south bank of the Clyde.

Long shot of the day

Under 2.5 goals in Barnsley v Rotherham @ 17/20

There’s a south Yorkshire derby to look forward to on Friday night when Barnsley host Rotherham at Oakwell and it could prove to be a cagey affair.

The Tykes look to have the edge on their rivals, but the visitors are likely to adopt a pragmatic approach and the Millers could be difficult to break down.

Six of Rotherham’s eight away games this term have gone under 2.5 goals, while six of the last eight meetings between these two teams have featured fewer than three strikes, so another low-scoring contest looks likely.
