Sunday is another bumper day of football action as the clash of Premier League title contenders Arsenal and Liverpool at the Emirates is the headline act.

That is one of four games in England’s top flight that also includes Chelsea hosting Newcastle, West Ham welcoming Manchester United and Crystal Palace battling Tottenham on a busy afternoon in London.

There’s an Edinburgh derby north of the border in one of three Scottish Premiership games as well as plenty of action from La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1. Our three best bets for Sunday are below.

Bet of the day

Hearts to beat Hibs @ 19/10

It’s the first Edinburgh derby of the season as Hibs and Hearts meet in a high noon showdown at Easter Road. The rivals find themselves in the rather unwelcome position of propping up the Scottish Premiership table, with only goal difference separating them.

Hibs have played a game less but this fixture has proved troublesome for them in recent times and they routinely fail to turn up on derby day. They’ve only managed one win in the last 14 and home advantage is of little help, with five Hearts wins and three draws in the last nine Easter Road meetings.

The Jambos are in the thrust of a new manager bounce, winning both games against St Mirren and Omonia Nicosia since former Blackpool boss Neil Critchley was installed. The travelling party from Gorgie may well head home in party mood yet again with the Edinburgh derby spoils.

Special of the day

Chelsea -1 vs Newcastle @ 15/8

Hibs’ record in derby games with Hearts isn’t a source of optimism for their fans and travelling Newcastle supporters will have a similarly gloomy outlook as they head for Stamford Bridge, where their side has not won since 2012.

Newcastle have lost 11 of their last 13 visits to this west London venue in 90 minutes, while they were also beaten in a penalty shootout in the EFL Cup last season.

The Magpies are winless in four games recently, failing to score in their last two, and are running into a Chelsea side that started the weekend as the Premier League’s third-highest scorers behind Man City and Tottenham.

Newcastle were beaten by more than a single-goal margin seven times during a run of 10 Stamford Bridge losses from 2012-2023 and with their confidence low and Enzo Maresca’s Blues rebuild coming together quite nicely, the visitors may get pushed aside readily again.

Long shot of the day

Arsenal and Liverpool to draw 1-1 @ 11/2

The big Premier League clash sees Arsenal welcome the well-oiled machine that is Arne Slot’s Liverpool to the Emirates.

The Dutchman is overseeing the best start to a season for the Reds since the early 1990s and they’ve conceded only three Premier League goals.

Arsenal have been a touch undercooked in recent weeks, as Leicester and Southampton put it up to them before last week’s loss at Bournemouth when they went down to 10 men in the first half.

They did show a willingness to dig in during last month’s 2-2 draw at Manchester City however and, at this early juncture, boss Mikel Arteta will probably see this as a game not to be lost, rather than one he has to win. For the third time in four Premier League meetings, this pair may end level and 1-1 as a correct score is a solid shout.
