Heading into the 2024-25 season, the Canadiens are coming off a 30-win season, while the Maple Leafs had 46.

The Maple Leafs have a new coach, Craig Berube, in his first season. Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis enters his fourth season.

The Maple Leafs lost to the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference First Round. The Canadiens missed the playoffs.

Along with Berube entering his first season with the team, the Maple Leafs also inked Chris Tanev to a six-year deal on July 1. He was third in the NHL with 207 blocked shots.

One of the biggest question marks for the Maple Leafs is the goaltending. Ilya Samsonov went to the Vegas Golden Knights this offseason, leaving the goaltending duties to Joseph Woll, assuming he can stay healthy.

To help assuage his potential injuries, the Maple Leafs signed Anthony Stolarz, the backup goalie for the Florida Panthers last season.

Meanwhile, the Canadiens enter with an intriguing goaltending situation with Sam Montembeault stepping in full-time. Last season, he played 41 games with a 90.3% save percentage.

Both teams have a star with Auston Matthew (Maple Leafs) and Nicholas Suzuki (Canadiens).

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens betting tips

The Maple Leafs had a potent offence last season, averaging 3.6 goals per game, second most in the NHL. However, they also allowed 261 goals (3.2 per game), 21st in the NHL.

The Canadiens averaged less than three goals per game and allowed 3.4 per game.

Montembeault will now have a full season of work. He went 16-15-9 last season and allowed 127 goals (3.1 per game).

I’m avoiding the puck line but taking the Maple Leafs at 1.55. I’d even lean over on the total. I have question marks for the Maple Leafs goaltending, which makes it hard to take them on the puck line.
