Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City predictions
This is the draw that Tottenham Hotspur fans really did not want.
Without a trophy since 2008, Spurs are desperate to pick up a first piece of silverware in more than a decade and a half. For many supporter a trophy is a bigger priority this season than Champions League qualification.
Ange Postecoglou has not shied away from that goal. “I always win things in my second year [at a club],” he said bullishly after the north London derby last month.
The EFL Cup is the last tournament Tottenham won, but a fourth-round tie against Manchester City means there is a good chance their participation in this event will come to an end on Wednesday.
Spurs do have a pretty good record against their upcoming opponents at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, having won five of the last eight meetings with City in north London.
Yet Pep Guardiola’s team have triumphed on their two visits to Tottenham in Postecoglou’s tenure, winning in both the FA Cup and the Premier League last term.
That second defeat by City contributed to Spurs missing out on a top-four finish and they have not yet shown enough this season to suggest they have improved sufficiently since Postecoglou’s maiden campaign in England.
Tottenham still have a tendency to blow hot and cold. A week after a fantastic performance brought them a 4-1 victory over West Ham United, Spurs slumped to a 1-0 defeat by previous winless Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Oliver Glasner’s side used a high-pressing game plan which forced numerous turnovers in Tottenham’s half. At the other end, Palace were pretty comfortable in holding the Spurs attack at arm’s length.
Postecoglou’s side play some of the most aesthetically pleasing football in the league on their day, but they must improve at grinding out results when they are not at their best, particularly away from home.
The Spurs boss will be looking for a response when City come to town, but that is easier said than done against opponents of this quality. The bookies understandably have City down as favourites to win this one.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City betting tips
Manchester City will be looking to compound Tottenham Hotspur’s weekend woes when the duo go head-to-head.
Manchester City to win
Manchester City ran out 1-0 winners against Southampton on Saturday. It was a much narrower margin of victory than most anticipated, although City never looked in danger of dropping points against Russell Martin’s men.
EFL Cup ties like this are difficult to predict until we have seen the two line-ups, but injury problems mean Guardiola may be forced to stick pretty close to the team that beat Southampton.

As well as Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne, Kyle Walker, Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish are currently sidelined, although the former could feature in some capacity against Spurs.
Tottenham can get the better of any other team in the country when they are on song, but they are much less reliable than this relentless City side.
It therefore feels much safer to tip the visitors in this game.

Manchester City over 1.5 goals
Only Manchester City and Chelsea have scored more goals than Tottenham in the first nine rounds of Premier League fixtures, so Postecoglou can be pleased with his team’s attacking efforts up to now.
At the other end, though, Spurs have shown themselves to be vulnerable.
It is a shortcoming that manifests itself in different ways depending on the game and the opponent, but one consistent factor is that Tottenham are simply too easy to play through.
That is a worry ahead of this duel with a City team whose build-up game allows them to carve open even the most effective pressers.
Even if Erling Haaland is given the night off (and there is no guarantee of that given the absentees mentioned above), City possess firepower in abundance.
Tottenham’s defence is likely to be breached at least twice on Wednesday night.
Choose over 1.5 goals for Manchester City at 7/10 with Betano
Savinho to score any time
Savinho has had a bright start to his Manchester City career after joining the club from sister side Girona over the summer.
The winger impressed against Chelsea in gameweek one and he has shown his quality in various appearances since then.
An excellent one-versus-one dribbler, Savinho will continue to lay on chances for his team-mates throughout the rest of his first season at City.
However, the Brazilian has yet to score for his current employers and he will be keen to change that as quickly as possible.
Savinho made the net bulge 11 times for Girona last term and he can break his duck for City against Tottenham in the EFL Cup.
