Tottenham v Aston Villa predictions

Tottenham head into this weekend’s crush Premier League in a very confident mood having delivered the four-time defending champions Manchester City their first defeat of the season in any competition on Wednesday night.

Ange Postecoglou’s side ran out 2-1 winners against the treble winners of last year to book their place in the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup as the north London club chase their first piece of silverware in 17 years.

The win for Spurs makes it now three wins in their last four games and eight in their last 10 as they recover from a slow start to the season which saw them win just one of their first four.

In the Premier League, progress has stalled slightly with two losses in their last three games, the first of which coming against Brighton in a game Spurs led 2-0 at half time, and the most recent of which was against a previously winless Crystal Palace side last weekend.

The defeat lifted Palace out of the relegation zone and leaves Tottenham in eighth place, now five points off the fourth and final Champions League position, a place in the table currently held by Sunday’s opponents, Aston Villa.

The Villans were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night against Crystal Palace, making 10 changes to their starting line up in a bid to rest players’ legs after a frantic run of matches which has seen their starters play two games per week since August.

The defeat ended a run of 11-matches without defeat in all competitions, though I’m sure Unai Emery won’t be upset that his side’s fixture list won’t get further congested.

In the league, Aston Villa have been coping well with the demands of playing twice a week, with the side currently sat in the top four, five points off the top of the tree, though only one ahead of Chelsea below them, and unbeaten in their last seven ahead of the weekend.

The club will feel their points tally is shy of a couple of points after conceding a 96th minute equaliser at home against Bournemouth in last weekend, and will be determined to get back to winning ways on Sunday against one of several sides gunning for that fourth and final Champions League spot which they currently have hold of.

Interestingly the team playing away from home has won seven of the last nine matches between the two sides, with Villa winning three of the last four, but were on the wrong end of a 4-0 home thrashing the last time the two sides met back in March.

A very tough match to predict, Spurs have won three out of four at home in the league this season while Villa have done the same away from home, goals can be expected but I feel the home side my just edge Sunday’s game with their home advantage, I’ll back a 3-2 but it could well go either way.

Tottenham v Aston Villa betting tips

Jhon Duran leads Aston Villa’s goal tally this season with his goal against Palace in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night being his eighth goal in all competitions, the majority of which coming off the bench.

Ollie Watkins still holds the starting spot in the side and despite pressure from Duran for the position, did his chances no wrong last weekend with the opener against Bournemouth, leaving him with five goals in his last six in the league now.

Totteham’s top goal scorer is winger Brennan Johnson with six goals to his name, including seven goals in his last 11 games for club and country, also finding the back of the net in his most recent fixture against Villa earlier this year.

  • Jhon Duran to score – 11/4 at bet365
  • Ollie Watkins and Brennan Johnson both to score – 8/1 at bet365
