Ryan Lowe has emerged as the odds on favourite to take replace Nigel Adkins as manager of League Two side Tranmere.

The former Rovers striker is currently priced at 4/5, ahead of Neil Danns and Andy Crosby, to be named as Adkins’ successor at Prenton Park after the latter was sacked as manager on Wednesday after 10 matches without a win leaves the club 22nd in the table.

Adkins had been in charge of the Merseyside club since September 2023, initially on a caretaker basis, with the side level on points with the relegation zone having lost six of their opening seven games of the campaign and steered them to a 16th placed finish last time out.

Now though, the Birkenhead side, without a win in 10, sit just two points above the relegation zone with only 28 points to their name from their 33 games this season.

Ryan Lowe appears to the man lined up to come in and try and fix things at Tranmere. The 46-year-old had been managing Preston in the Championship at the start of the season before being sacked after just one league game of the campaign.

Lowe, who spent a season as a player for Tranmere in League One, has won promotion out of the fourth tier on two occasions in his managerial career, going up from League Two with Bury in 2019 before achieving the same feat with Plymouth the following year.

Another former Tranmere player, Neil Danns, is also in the running at 3/1 to be given the promotion from assistant manager to take over managerial duties in the Prenton Park dugout.

The 42-year-old’s only previous experience in charge of a team was managing Macclesfield FC for the second half of the 2022-23 season in the eighth tier of English football, though he did secure promotion.

Priced slightly behind at 4/1 is Andy Crosby, the former Northern Ireland manager who has been out of management since his sacking as Port Vale manager 12 months ago with the side 20th in League One.
