The new Federation of Kenya Football (FKF) boss Mohamed Hussein’s first task in office will be naming a new coach for Kenya Harambee Stars team following the resignation of Engin Firat.
The Turkish who had over two years remaining on his contract resigned citing unpaid salaries.
“I would have wanted our first press conference to be about the manifesto but I got the news of the coach’s resignation last night and had to come out officially to avoid speculation,” said Hussein flanked by his deputy, McDonald Mariga.
“We have started the process of filling the avoid and we hope to conclude this as soon as possible as we want a strong show in the CHAN and also prepare well for forthcoming Afcon campaigns,” he added.
Under Firat, Kenya failed to qualify for Afcon 2025 after finishing third behind Cameroon and Zimbabwe in their group but played all their home matches away from home due to lack of a standard stadium.
The country is under enormous pressure to complete rehabilitation of Moi International stadium, Kasarani and Nyayo stadium which are earmarked to host CHAN early next year with uncertainty over whether the two will be ready in time still lingering.
Kenya alongside Uganda and Tanzania have the hosting rights for next edition of CHAN as well as the 2027 Afcon but only the latter at the moment appears ready in terms of facilities.
