Uganda tops the medal standings in the 14th edition of the East Africa Community Inter-Parliamentary Games, which will conclude on Monday in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa.
Uganda has so far amassed 9 gold, 10 silver, and 5 bronze medals ahead of hosts Kenya who have secured 3 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
Tanzania is in third place with two gold, two silver, and five bronze medals in the highly competitive games. Hon. Anathropia Theonest’s victory in the women’s 800m finals buoyed Tanzania’s performance.
EALA secured fourth position with one silver medal, while Rwanda rounded out the medal table in fifth place with one bronze medal.
The highlight of Saturday was Uganda’s victory in the women’s tug-of-war. The drizzling Mombasa weather set the perfect stage for the showdown between the Ugandans and neighbouring Kenya.
While Uganda claimed a 2-1 victory, Kenya showcased its prowess and determination proving they were no pushovers.
In a heated women’s contest earlier, Uganda edged out Tanzania in a nail-biting 2-1 pull victory flexing their muscles and strategy.
Meanwhile, Kenya, ever ready for a challenge, benefited from the walkovers handed out after Burundi, South Sudan and EALA teams failed to show up.
The men’s category mirrored the same scenario, with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda all picking up walkover wins. Despite the absence of some opponents, Kenya’s Lawmakers delivered a spirited performance, pulling their way to 11 points and securing a stage finish. Uganda clinched the overall men’s crown with 13 points, narrowly beating Tanzania with 12 points. Kenya, just a single point shy, claimed third.
In the women’s rankings, Uganda also led with 14 points, followed closely by Tanzania at 13, with Kenya bagging 9 points.
Impressed by the high level of competition, Mercy Mugao the Business and Development Manager of Mchezo Limited, the sponsors of the ongoing competitions said the ladies’ Tug of War was a sheer show of resilience and mental toughness.
In other disciplines, Kenya’s Simon Kang’ara outpaced Uganda’s Ocan Patrick in the last round of the 1600m walk to claim gold with an impressive time of 9:42.6.
Kingara who had trailed Uganda’s Patrick Ocan for most of the race, put in a strong finish to beat Patrick to second place.
