Victoria University (VU) Crocs have gained promotion to the National Basketball League after sweeping Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) Flames in the Division I Playoff Semifinals.
The Crocs completed the sweep after winning a tough Game 3, 72-53, on Wednesday night at Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
Rogers Sserunyigo’s side breathed through Game 2 on Sunday but the Flames treated the elimination game as such, at least for the opening 20 minutes.
On the defensive end of the ball, it was active hands in the opening quarter, especially in the key. Neither side gave away easy points at the basket as they both went for the zone but UMU edged the period 16-15.
As has been the case all season, Crocs played the game with a high tempo—the preference of coach Sserunyigo—through the three quarters, but the difference came in the second period when his charges stuck to the 2-3 that forced well over ten turnovers. The Crocs’ defence forced the Flames into tough jump-shooting, ultimately taking control of the game and never looking back.
Center Joseph Ayol led the way for the Crocs with a 19 points and 12 rebounds double-double. Ronald Ayume contributed 17 points off the bench while wing Cyrus Wobusobozi tallied 11 points to go with 6 rebounds and 9 dimes.
John Otuko top-scored for the Flames with 11 points. Joshua Duallo struggled to convert around the basket but dominated the glass, pulling down a game-high 22 rebounds to go with 8 points.
