Vipers SC ensured they ended the first round of the 2024/25 season on a high, picking victory against Maroons FC on Monday at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The Venoms edged Maroons FC 1-0 to maintain their grip at the top of the table.
The game was highlighted by FIFA referee Mashood Ssali officially retiring. There was a brief ceremony to send him off before kickoff with both teams lining up alongside other match officials who raised their flags in honor of his commendable performance over the years.
Moses Waiswa scored the lone goal of the game, coming in the 18th minute, curling home straight from a free kick at the edge of the box.
From then on, the game was fairly balanced with either side having opportunities but Vipers SC defended resiliently to claim all three points.
The result means Vipers SC lead the log at the end of the first round with 34 points, four ahead of second placed NEC FC who play Mbale Heroes FC on Tuesday.
Maroons FC on the other hand, are fifth on the table with 22 points.
In the other games played on Monday, Express FC defeated UPDF FC 2-0 in Bombo while Soltilo Bright Stars drew 1-1 at home against Lugazi FC.
