Wayne Rooney got his first league win with Plymouth Argyle in dramatic fashion, beating top of the table Sunderland at the death.
The former England captain’s side beat the high flying Black Cats 3-2 at Home Park on Saturday, courtesy of a Dan Ballard own goal, a Ryan Hardie penalty and a last ditch winner from Joe Edwards.

Sunderland had pulled it back to 2-2 with four minutes to go through Romaine Mundle – but Edwards’ late strike saved the day for Rooney and co in the third minute of added time.
Plymouth’s only win this season had come in the first round of the League Cup last month, beating League Two Cheltenham Town 3-0.
And now, five games into the league campaign, Rooney has finally got three points under his belt in the league.
The win will feel all the more sweet given it was against top of the table Sunderland.
The Wearside outfit had won their opening four games of the campaign.
Had they won at Home Park, it would have been the first time ever in their history that they’d won their first five league games of a season.
That’s an incredible feat given the Black Cats have been crowned the Champions of England six times in their 144-year history.
Patrick Roberts‘ 24th minute spot kick had them believing they were set to seal that feat.
However, Regis Le Bris’ side couldn’t turn things around after Edwards’ late strike.
Speaking to talkSPORT after the game, Rooney said: “There’s always a relief, but I’m very pleased for the players because they’ve put a lot of work in from pre-season to now.

“And the fans. I think the fans have seen what we’ve been trying to do over the last few weeks up to now in our performances. But it always helps when you get the result, so I’m pleased for both the players and the fans.”
Rooney’s appointment at Plymouth raised eyebrows following his stint as manager of Birmingham City.
The Manchester United legend took over from John Eustace at St Andrew’s near the start of last season despite the Blues’ strong start to the campaign.
He went on to win just two games out of his 15 in charge, which included nine losses.
Rooney was sacked in the January and Birmingham were later relegated at the end of the season to League One.
Now, Rooney will be hoping Saturday’s win will spark a change in direction for his managerial career.
Plymouth’s victory takes them to 16th in the table, with Sunderland still top, one point ahead of second place Blackburn.
