Rangers announced his passing in a statement on Thursday morning.

The statement from a club spokesperson read: “We are devastated to have learned of the passing of one of our supporters in a road traffic accident overnight in Istanbul.

“The immediate thoughts of everyone at the club are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

“We are remaining in constant contact with both the Turkish and British authorities over this tragic incident.”

According to local reports, Mr Potter was struck by a car whilst trying to cross a road at around 4.30am local time.

The incident occurred near the city’s Naval Museum after he had withdrawn money from an ATM on his way back to the hotel.

Mr Potter was hit by a vehicle before being run over by another car, according to eyewitnesses.

The Daily Record reports that an investigation into the accident has been launched, with statements taken from the drivers involved.

Fenerbahce have also released a statement in response, stating: “We extend our deepest condolences to Rangers FC and the entire Rangers community.

“We are deeply saddened to receive the heartbreaking news that a Rangers FC supporter, who traveled to Istanbul to support his team in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 against our club Fenerbahçe, has tragically lost his life in a traffic accident.
