Wednesday racing tips
Newton Abbot
2.00: Hymac 15/8 (1pt)
2.30: Dr T J Eckleburg 5/1 each-way (1.5pts)
3.00: Vocito 5/4 (2pts)
4.00: Livin On Luco 17/2 each-way (1pt)
Hymac
One Big Bang has to contend with a 10lb penalty for his wins at Haydock and Uttoxeter, retaining the ride on claimer Alex Chadwick.
His win over Livin On Luco was comfortable yet expected as the 1/2 favourite and could be punished by this rise in the weights along with a penalty against the jointly rated Hymac.
However, he’s only been seen over hurdles twice, back in 2022 and looks to be using this switch back to hurdles for a continued season over fences.
But his finish in second place, a nose behind Saint Davy has worked out very well and could be a sign of more to come from this horse who has now gone very well over fences getting off the mark at the fourth time of asking last time out at Cheltenham.
Prior to that he’s placed third and second with his debut over fences ending abruptly as he pulled up four fences out.
The pair seem to relish longer distances but this extended 2m5f course should test them on the heavy ground.
Kruger Park ran very well at Newbury in March to beat Il Va De Soi by over eight lengths.
He was upped 11lb for that win which seemed to prevent him from following that win up when second in testing ground at Uttoxeter.
He carries the same weight as Hymac here and he has Harry Cobden on board as opposed to the claim of Freddie Gingell, which gives Hymac more of a chance.
Dr T J Eckleburg
Fast Buck has potential each-way as the 14/1 shot in a small field, as he’s 4lb lower than when he last won, in January at Wincanton.
He’s only been seen running to form once since when running well at Ludlow, also off 122.
The gelding had a wind op in August reappeared at 66/1 at Wincanton over hurdles carrying top-weight.
Should run better back over fences having got that first run of the season out of the way.
But he’s taking on three younger horses who could make a mark back for their seasonal reappearances.
Royal Jewel is yet to be seen over fences and could be well-weighted to strike straight away on debut after showing good form over hurdles at Exeter last season.
However, Champagnesuperover is down to a dangerous mark and looks to make a comeback back down to 2m.
The nine-year-old was rated as high as 137 over hurdles and ran fairly respectably off 134 on his chase debut all the way back in 2021, over 2m.
His return after 550 days off didn’t yield any decent results over hurdles, falling last time out at Uttoxeter which could be another reason for a return over a sharper distance.
It’s tough to back him first time out though, which leaves Dr T J Eckleburg who has run well over fences on numerous occasions in a busy campaign last season.
Goes well in tough conditions and appeals much more than others here, especially as he’s still only six-years-old.
Vocito
This is an interesting hurdle contest with just six runners, most of which are returning to hurdles for the first time in a while, having been chasing, like Gardener, Royal Mer and Celtic Art.
Major Fortune seems to prefer longer distances running well for the Skeltons but doesn’t appeal down to this trip, whereas Vocito really does for trainer Olly Murphy.
Both of those horses have seen plenty of winners recently, going up in the weights progressively. Vocito has 17 hurdle runs and only three wins but all three have come in the last four runs.
And seems to be thriving for this yard since heading there in May 2024.
Livin On Luco
Livin On Luco was mentioned above and also runs at Newton Abbot today, at a great price.
He was consistent as a hurdler placing in the top two in his last four contests, only ever failing to do so once in his last seven when falling behind Isaac Des Obeaux.
Goes well on heavy ground and looks a horse to go well over fences.
