West Bromwich Albion have broken a half century long record which highlights a big problem despite their steady start to the season.
Carlos Corberan’s side currently sit in the Championship play-off places with a decent points haul, but their home fans have been starved of action.
West Brom have only scored three goals in their first seven home matches of the 2024/25 campaign – beating York’s record of four during the 1972/73 season.
This may come as a surprise when looking at the Championship table in isolation, as West Brom are placed fifth with 22 points.
However, the side’s recent struggles can be revealed through their match results, having drawn six games in a row – including four 0-0 stalemates.
They’ve scored just two goals in that run, one each against Luton Town and Oxford United, both of which were away from home.
After their recent goalless draw against Burnley at home, Corberan said: “We weren’t clinical in the game and in our final decisions, whether that be in front of goal, making the right pass or using the best option.
“Every draw is different. We cannot be happy with a draw as West Bromwich Albion. However, the draw tells you what you have done well and things you can do better, especially when we are accumulating a number of these particular results.
“In football and in life, you need to show the belief of what we can do on the pitch to change this momentum and start achieving the results we want to achieve.
“We know how competitive the Championship is and this doesn’t come as a surprise to us. We need to keep insisting on things we are doing well to find the results we want to achieve.”
West Brom from seven home matches only have ten points, which would place them 20th in a home only league table.
In contrast, they would place third in the away table thanks to their 12 points in seven games with three wins, three draws and a sole loss to Sheffield Wednesday in September.
Yes, they have problems scoring at the Hawthorns, but away from home they have scored the most goals in the league with twelve.
Striker Josh Maja currently places second in the golden boot race with eight, three behind Borja Sainz from Norwich City.
The 25-year-old has scored seven times in away matches, including a hat-trick against QPR, but has only managed one goal at home against Sheffield Wednesday.
West Brom have defended well this season only conceding eight goals while keeping the same amount of clean sheets.
Fans of the club are eyeing promotion to the Premier League as their six year wait to play in the top flight continues.
Last season the Magpies fought to a play-off spot after securing fifth, but were knocked out in the semi-final by eventual winners Southampton.
