West Ham v Manchester United predictions
Sunday’s clash at London Stadium is a huge match that could have big implications on the status of both teams’ managers with both under pressure for their jobs after disappointing starts to the new season.
Manchester United make the trip to the capital as favourites for victory despite having won only one of their last seven matches in all competitions, with the Red Devils sat down in 12th place in the Premier League table.
Erik ten Hag’s side recent victory did come in their last league outing with a 2-1 home win over Brentford, which relieved some talk of the Dutchman being out of a job in the near future, but couldn’t follow that victory up with another in midweek on the continent.
The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw with a Fenerbahce side managed by Jose Mourinho in the Europa League, leaving them with just three points from their opening three games in the competition and sitting down in 21st in the league phase standings.
In spite of their lack of wins in recent weeks, Manchester United head into the weekend unbeaten in four games and with only one defeat in their last nine, a record they will be hoping to extend on Sunday afternoon.
West Ham, like their visitors, have won just one of their last seven in all competitions heading into Sunday afternoon’s huge clash, though that win did come in their most recent home game, a 4-1 win over Ipswich to deliver just their second league win of the season.
Julen Lopetegui was appointed as David Moyes’ successor in the summer but has failed to hit the ground running at the London Stadium, with the Hammers starting the weekend down in 15th place in the league table with just eight points from as many matches.
Their big win over the newly promoted Tractor Boys was supposed to be turning point in their season and a recovery in from and a climb up the table, but the east London side could only follow the victory up with a heavy 4-1 defeat at Tottenham in a London derby last week.
The Irons have lost three of their four league games at the London Stadium this season, though those three losses all came against teams in the current top six, but will need to turn their stadium into something of a fortress if they want to be challenging for those European positions come the end of the season.
A statement win over a struggling Man United side could be the perfect opportunity to give a massive confidence boost to the squad ahead of what, on paper, looks to be a mostly kind run of fixtures between now and the festive period.
The last six meetings between these two teams have all been won by the home side, a record West Ham will be looking to continue on Sunday, though Lopetegui’s record of two games and two defeats against ten Hag leaves more than a little to be desired.
My belief is that a draw is the most likely outcome from this weekend’s crunch match between two sides struggling to win matches of late, and with both sides struggling to keep clean sheets of late, goals can also be expected – 2-2 could be a good shout.
West Ham v Manchester United betting tips
Marcus Rashford, after a disappointing season last time out, has been showing glimpses, particularly in recent weeks of being back to his dangerous self, a direct and tricky winger with more than an eye for goal, and has a good record against West Ham with five goals against them.
As previously outlined, a draw seems the most probable result in a match between two teams struggling to both win and keep clean sheets.
Rasmus Hojlund has only recently come back from injury for United and was scored the winner in the 2-1 win against Brentford last weekend and should be well rested for a strong performance after starting on the bench in Istanbul on Thursday night.
Jarrod Bowen leads West Ham’s scoring records this season, which includes a goal and an assist in a man of the match performance in their last home game against Ipswich, and will be determined to put in a captain’s performance in a big game on Sunday.
