Which UPL club did the best business in the January transfer window

The mid-season transfer window concluded over the last weekend with almost all Uganda Premier League clubs doing some business.

From table leaders Vipers, through champions SC Villa to Mbale Heroes, there have some business.

Here, Ismael Kiyonga gives a verdict on the transfers more so at the big clubs.

Vipers back Ayala, Muhumuzza with firepower, more midfield options

The Venoms have scored 25 goals so far with Allan Okello (11) and Milton Karisa (7) contributing 72% of the goals.

With Karisa likely to miss the start of the second round and Yunus Sentamu, Kenneth Kimera, Gusto Mulongo and Salem Ekbad firing blanks, the addition of Isaac Ogwang is very timely.

The ex-SC Villa and Arua Hills striker has scored 8 goals for Police in the first round and if he maintains that form, there is no doubt he will relive some pressure from Okello and Karisa.

Marvin Youngman who returns to the team gives more midfield options especially with Siraje Sentamu not fully trusted while Paul Mbowa is makeshift.

Letting go of Ghanaian Asiwome Fumador is a good decision while giving Fazil Tumwine chance to prove at Wakiso Giants on loan is also a decent decision.

KCCA gamble on Lutalo, NEC strengthen where they are already strong

With a lethal forward line, KCCA would be better positioned on the table and the gap between them and leaders wouldn’t be that wide as it is now.

With nagging injuries to Sadat Anaku and Derrick Nsibambi, many thought KCCA would go for another centre forward option but it hasn’t been the case with another attacking midfielder in Umar Lutalo the new acquisition.

He has goals in himself but question remains whether he will do what Bright Anukani, Shafik Nana Kwikiriza, Sharif Ssengendo and other attacking midfielders have failed to do.

The return of Filbert Obenchan and Peter Magambo from long term injuries will feel like new signings but KCCA needed a lethal forward in my opinion.

Their tenants NEC, just within a point of leaders Vipers have signed Alpha Ssali and Kasinde who are predominantly right wingers.

With Paul Mucureezi, James Jarieko and even Marvin Kavuma playing on that side, was it necessary to add both Ssali and Kasinde? We wait to see.

Villa look to the academy, Express ship in experience while Police appear to have replaced Ogwang immediately

Villa have lacked experience and still went for two rookies in Brian Masembe and Cyrus Bajja while also signing experienced winger Sula Matovu, seen as a direct replacement for Hakim Kiwanuka who moved to APR.

The Red Eagles have had a good season so far and in Ramsey Kawooya and Muhammad Ssenoga, they have signed experience.

The Cops lost Ogwang and Denis Iguma but with the addition of Emmanuel Loki and potential registration of Umar Kasumba, they look to have done well.

Relegation fighting Wakiso Giants go for striking options, Mbale Heroes sign eleven while Lugazi sign several

A lot of business is always expected at the bottom but only Lugazi and Mbale Heroes have made several signings.

Fazil “Chopra” Tumwine dribbles the ball.

Question will be asked of coaches if they can in a short period make them gel and give the results desired to stay up.

Wakiso Giants have lacked goals in the first round and thus going for Fazil Tumwine and the likely addition of Moses Oloya gives Steven Bengo and Tonny Mawejje good options on the forward line.

Elsewhere, Soltilo Bright Stars have reliably added to their goalscoring options but loss of Marvin Youngman and Ashraf Mulindi could hurt.

URA haven’t backed Alex Isabirye enough in the window while BUL and Kikomeko will feel confident after some good additions and letting go of deadwood.
