Thomas Tuchel is returning to England.

The former Chelsea boss has been appointed as Gareth Southgate‘s permanent successor as manager of the Three Lions.

Tuchel is the new England manager

Tuchel will be back in England for the first time in two years since he exited Stamford Bridge in controversial circumstances.

And talkSPORT.com has taken a look back at why he left the Blues…

Why did Tuchel leave Chelsea?

Tuchel departed Chelsea in September 2022 following a 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

The loss came during a poor start to the season, but the sacking shocked many after he led the club to glory in UEFA‘s primary competition a year earlier.

That trophy came only six months into his tenure with the Blues, and a UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup followed.

But owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali decided his time was up and that is where some controversy started.

Boehly and Eghbali had just taken over Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in May 2022.

They backed Tuchel in their first transfer window, seeing the club spend £270million on many players including Raheem Sterling and Marc Cucurella.

However, things didn’t go as well as planned and the German was reported to have wanted to sign other targets.

Tuchel was also said to have started to feel ‘disenchanted’ with the way the club was being run under their new ownership.

Tuchel was sacked by Boehly a few months after he became owner

This coincided with Chelsea’s poor form at the time and he was sacked only two months into the 2022/23 season.

Last year, more details on his dismissal were then revealed by the manager, indicating how poor his relationship was with the ownership at Stamford Bridge.

“It was a shock,” Tuchel told the Daily Mail. “I felt it, strangely, when I drove to the training centre.

“The meeting we had felt unusual – and it turned out to be a very short meeting.

“It was 8am, or something, and it lasted three to five minutes. I was also not in the mood to talk longer.

“The decision had been made and, honestly, it was a shock for all of us. We had a feeling that we were in the right spot at the right time.

“We felt that we could achieve big things and we wanted to stay longer – it was as simple as that.”

So, Tuchel’s time at Chelsea didn’t end well, but he still maintains a strong reputation after an impressive spell in England…

What is his record in England?

Tuchel has won trophies in France and Germany, but never in England despite having success in European competitions.

His overall record in the country is impressive though.

In the Premier League, he took charge of 63 games in total and won 35 of them, only losing 11.

His Chelsea side scored 109 goals in that time and conceded 55 which is less than a goal a game during his tenure.

Tuchel also picked up two top-flight Manager of the Month awards.

He failed to win a domestic trophy with the Blues but he did reach two FA Cup finals, and the EFL Cup final while also securing two top-four finishes in the league.

Tuchel had a great record in the Premier League

Tuchel knows how to succeed at a team and compete for trophies, so it will now be his duty to lead England to glory.

Speaking after his appointment, he said: “I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team.

“I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.

“To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.

“Working closely with Anthony [Barry] as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud.

“I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark and John, for their trust and I am looking forward to starting our journey together.”
