Borussia Dortmund’s next English breakout star continues to make a name for himself in Europe – despite the moniker change on his shirt.

Jamie Gittens, who has been dubbed ‘the next Jadon Sancho’, is now solely flying the flag at BVB following Jude Bellingham‘s exit.

The 20-year-old is in the form of his life in Germany, having followed Sancho’s pathway in joining from Manchester City‘s academy.

The London-born winger has scored five goals and registered one assist in seven games in all competitions this season.

That included a double as Borussia Dortmund beat Club Brugge 3-0 in their Champions League opener last month.

His new lease of life has coincided with using a shorter version of his surname on the back of his shirt for the 2024/25 season.

Why is he no longer called Jamie Bynoe-Gittens?

The England youth international dropped the first part of his double-barrelled surname from his shirt on his father’s advice.

Both parts of his original moniker come from his Barbados-born dad Michael ‘Mike’ Bynoe-Gittens.

Dortmund’s No.43 explained to the club’s media team this summer: “Both are the names of my father, but he said that he thinks it’s better if I’m only called Gittens because it’s shorter.

“Most people know him as Gittens, so I’ll only play with Gittens too in the future.”

“The shorter the better” he told German outlet Bild as well.

Gittens is currently in his fourth season at the Westfalenstadion but is finally breaking through under new boss Nuri Sahin.

The attacker was originally on the books at Reading like Michael Olise, but was plucked by the Man City academy in 2018.

At 16 he swapped the Etihad for the Bundesliga like Sancho before him but injuries wreaked havoc on his first two years at the club.

He made 25 appearances across 34 matches last season and scored his first Champions League goal, but that was one of only two efforts.

Gittens has already more than doubled that tally this term and is on the cusp of being a household name.
