Los Angeles is the second-largest city in the United States.

They are also one of only two cities in the US that have two NFL teams but it hasn’t always been that way.

The history of the NFL in Los Angeles is quite unique.

Both the Chargers and Rams had spells in Los Angeles before leaving the city at different times and both announcing their return in 2016.

The Los Angeles Rams were initially founded in 1936 in Cleveland and played in the AFL for one season before joining the NFL in 1946.

In 1946 the team then moved to Los Angeles and the city became the first in the West Coast to host an NFL team as the Rams played in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

However, after the 1994 season the Rams left LA and moved to St. Louis and five seasons later, the St. Louis Rams, led by Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner, won their first Super Bowl in 2000.

Meanwhile the Los Angeles Chargers were founded in 1959 by Barron Hilton.

In 1961, the team also left Los Angeles and moved 120 miles south to San Diego.

As part of the AFL, the Chargers won four AFL West titles and one AFL championship.

How did Los Angeles end up with two teams?

A population of four million, gives LA a market that the NFL can capitalise on.

The Rams won the Superbowl in 2022

A large diverse population with a city that is home to people from all over the world but is more well known for Hollywood and it’s movie industry now has two NFL teams to root for and a growing rivalry.

The NFL set up mirrors the NBA which has had two basketball teams since 1984 when the San Diego Clippers joined the Los Angeles Lakers in Tinseltown.

When did the Rams move back to Los Angeles?

In 2016 the team moved back to LA after 21 years in St Louis and a Super Bowl title.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke was promised that the St Louis Dome would be kept up to NFL standards, this did not happen and a desire for new stadium along with the growth in Southern California pushed the decision to head back to LA.

The Rams would go on to win their second Super Bowl in 2022 when they defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in to win 23-20 in their own SoFi Stadium.

When did the Chargers move back to Los Angeles?

It was in 2016, the same year as the Rams, the Chargers announced they would be moving back to Los Angeles for the 2017 season after 56 years in San Diego.

They were founded in LA in 1960 but moved along the coast just a year later to make their home in San Diego.

The current owner of the Chargers is Dean Spanos and the team is yet to win a Super Bowl title with a playoff record of 12-19 and one appearance in the Super Bowl in 1995.
